Description
UNITED STATES PATENT GEErcE.
ISAAC H. ADAMS, OF MONTANA, IOWA.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,499, dated August 1,1871.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, IsAAC H. ADAMS, of Montana, in the county of Boone and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Washing- `Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved washingmachine, in which the essential feature is an arrangement of the rubbing-boards, which is placed in the bottom of the tub, and commonly made stationary7 with a joint at or about the center, and connecting the lower part with the levers for working the vibrating' board, so that after the latter has been raised well off the clothes the said jointed part will be raised so as to turn and shift the clothes to facilitate the presenting all sides to the rubbing-boards.
Figure lis a sectional elevation of my improved machine, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the case or tub, which has three vertical sides and one oblique side, B, 011 which, near the bottom, is placed a iixed rubbing-board, C, and below this and over the bottom of the case is another rubbing-board, D, which is hinged to the lower edge of C, as shown at E. This part has curved bars, F, jointed to it, one at each end, which arms have a slot, G, in the upper part, by which they are connected to the bars H, by which the movable rubber I is connected to the handlevers K for being vibrated, each bar having a stud-pin, L, for working in the slot of the bar connected to it. The movable rubbing-board is rigidly connected to the bars H, and it has a stud-pin, M, with friction-rollers, one at each end, projecting into a curved guide-slot, N, -in each end wall of the tub for guiding the said board in its up-and-down movements on the clothes, which are placed between it and the lower board C D. O represents a hand rubbing-board applied to the inner wall of the oblique side B of the case in a convenient position for use when any hand rubbing is required. The said board may be formed by working grooves into the board B, or a corrugated or grooved board made separately maybe attached. The rubbing-boards O D and M have slots P made through them, as shown, to facilitate the circulation of the water. The rubbing-board I may be worked over the one O D, the same as would be the case if the latter were one rigid board, as they are commonly arranged, by not lifting the levers K high enough to raise the bars F, but by raising them higher, so that the stud-pins I coming against the upper walls of the slots will lift the part D of the lower board and swing it on the joint E, it will turn or raise the clothes and present them to the upper rubber in a new position to be acted on by it; and, also, the said rubber I will shift the clothes so presented, or act in conjunction with the lower rubber C D for shifting them.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination, with the movable rubbingboard I, of the board C D, the latter being made in two parts, one of which is permanently attached to the tub and the other hinged to the first, and arranged to work in conjunction with the board I, all substantially as speciiied.
2. The part D of the lower board, connected to the bars H of the boa-rd I by the curved slotted arms F and studs M, all substantially as specied.
3. The board I, having the studs M arranged in the curved grooves N in the ends yof the tubs, all substantially as specied.
ISAAC H. ADAMS.
Witnesses:
J. A. EATON, D. A. HUNGERFOED.
