Description

. angular slot or hole, e.
UNITED STATES SAMUEL P. HALLEOK, OF ORISKANY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHEESE-VAT FASTENERS.
Specification forming partvof Letters Patent No. 117,411, dated July 25, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL P. HALLECK, of Oriskany, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cheese-Vat Fastener; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specication.
The object of this invention is to afford greater facility for tipping a cheese-vat, and for securing it in a horizontal or other position. To this end it con sists in a novel fa stenin g for the vat, whereby it may be locked in a horizontal position, or may, when desired, be changed or shifted into an inclined position.
In the accompanyin g drawin g, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a cheese-vat having my fastening applied. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, and Fig. 3 is an inverted plan of a part of the fastening.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A is the vat, which is of ordinary form, and is pivoted at its middle by an axle, B, across its bottom, to two standards, C O, and has at its rear end two legs, a a., of a suitable length to reach the ground when the vat is in a horizontal position, and the said vat is provided at the front with two other legs, b b, which only reach the ground when it is in an inclined position. D is a metal. plate projecting from the forward portion of the upper side of which is a flange, c, from which there eX- tend to the front of the plate other flanges, l d. In the portion of the plate bounded by said iianges, extending transversely across the plate, is a rect- This plate is secured by screws to the bottom of the vat, with the ange o bearing against the front thereof, and it has formed on its under side a case or shell, f, for the reception of a bolt, E, and some distance in rear of said case is a lug, g, through which the rear end of the bolt passes. This bolt E has formed on its forward portion a looplike handle, h, which projects beyond the plate D, so as to provide for the easy manipulation of the bolt. At the rear end of the bolt is a tail-like piece, fi, which passes through a hole or bearing in the lug g, and
is encircled by a spiral spring, I, thatbears against a shoulder formed at thejunction of said tail-piece with the body ofthe bolt and against the said lug g, and forces the bolt outward. Fis a narrow iiat swinging standard, which is pivoted to bear ings G G immediately under the forward portion of the bolt E and plate D. This standard has arectan guiar hole or slot, j, formed in it for the reception of the bolt E, and its upper end extends up through the hole e in the plate D. When the vat is in a horizontal position the bolt E, projecting through the hole j in the standard F, supports the forward portion of the vat, the standard being inthe mean time prevented from swinging out beyond the bolt, and thereby letting the vat drop, by projecting through the hole c in tne plate D. Vhen desirable to incline the vat the bolt is pressed back by means of its handle so as to remove it from the swinging standard F. The vat may then be tipp ed up or inclined, the plate D sliding down on the standard F, which swings toward the vat to adjust itself to the latters swinging or tipping. When in this inclined position the front plate of the vat is supported by the short legs b b.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the slotted plate D, bolt E, spring I, and slotted swinging standard F, the whole constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
