FOLDING BED-SEAT.
To all wh-0m it may concern.'
Be it known that'we,AXELEoKBERG, a
citizen of the United States, and GUsTAF OHRs'rRoM,
and more particularly to improvements in l folding bed-seats.
A*agonal The primary obj ect of our invention is the provision of a foldinglbed-seat which is durable inl construction, simple to operate, and which contains few parts so that the possibility of wear on the moving parts when folding or extending r,the seat `is reducedto the minimum. ,i p
Another object of our invention is the production of a yielding -f 'seat or supporting member which will not sag from use, and in whichfthe stretches ployed in articles of furniture ofy this'type are atall times retained in flattenedv condition. l
' Another object of ourinvention is to provide spring supporting devices for the seat member having integral connector parts whereby the' separate connections usually employed are dispensed withl and consequent wear avoided. v
.Anotherobj ect of our invention isthepro vision of diagonal webbings interwoven with cross or transverse webbings in such a manner that thelatter are at all times retained in flat condition, and toso supportv and lace or thread the diagonal ywebbings through supporting elementsthat theyar'e themselves at,
all times retained in flatl condition, the diand cross ywelobings providing a flat support for the bedding and body.
Other objects of our invention are, to connect the-folding or' collapsible side supporting members of the seat insucha manner that they cannot spreadV under -weightsup- Vported thereby, and to otherwise improve on folding articles' of furniture v.now in use.
' To these ends the invention consists in the lnovell features of construction, and in the arrangementL )and combination of parts -to -be 'hereinafter "described and particularly pointed outin the subjoinedclaims.
In the drawings,f-Figurelis a side eleva- 'tioiiy of affolding bed-seat embodying my invention. ffFigrQ is a plan view of the'same.

Fig. 3 Jisan enlarged cross section taken on line 3 3, Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a side elevation ofthe .bed-.seat as it appears when folded. Figv is a detached perspective view of one of the spring supporting devices for the webbmg. F ig. 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of spring supporting device.
Referring now to the drawings in detail,
v like numerals of reference referto like parts in the several figures.
The reference numeral l7 designates the y folding or collapsible side members of the bed-seat, each of which is preferably constructed of two sets of parallel wooden or metallic bars 8 arranged diagonally, the bars of each oflsai'd sets being adapted lto cross those of the other, as at 9, and have their upper ends meet the upper-ends of said other set,'.to which they are pivotallysecured, as at l0. At their points of crossing the 'bars of both sets are also pivotally connected together. `While .the exact arrangement and connection of these side bars provide collapsible members which are capable of supporting heavyv weights without unduly straining the connections, it is nevertheless our intention that such arrangement and connection may be changed without departing from our invention, as' it is possible to construct collapsible side members otherwise than herein shown and ldescribed which of articles-constructed to fold accordeon-like are now in use. vWe nevertheless consider the eXact arrangement and connection yof of considerable importance, due to the sustaining qualities of the same. At intervals lalong the length of these folding side members, dove-tailed transverse grooves 12 are formed in several of the bars near their upper and lower ends,'in which grooves are entered'the flaring ends 13 of transverse conv nector rods 14, said rods serving to tie the would be capable of use in connection with other parts of our bed-seat, as various forms -bars constituting the folding side members structions become loose and permit the foldv ing side members to spread when the seat supports a load. A Y f 15 designates a supporting member which comprises'yielding supporting devices 16 secured to the upper ends of the side members springwform, as at 19, and'eXtended in oppol, site directions from said `spring to provide 7 and webbings 17, 18, spanning the vspace betweensaid supporting devices'at opposite sides of the seat. 16 are arranged in two series, one series be'- ing securedto the top of each collapsible vside member and thesupporting-devices of' one series being directly opposite thoseof the other. In preferred form, each supportingdevicev is Constructed of a single piece of wire coiled approximately.' midlen'gth Vinto spiral# at one enda combined pivot and'securing member 20 and at itsother end a connector 21. The securing-member Q0 is formed by rebending the wire Vinto UV-foriiiation, the eX- tremity ofthe wire at this end being thrust through registering openings inv the upper 'ends of two meeting bars 8 andserving as a pivot connection for said bars, the extremity being suitably headedif desired, as at 22, so'as to prevent'withdrawal from said bars. yThe connector 21 is preferably formed b f bendinoflthe wireinto triangular loo form, through which' the .webbings 17., 18 are laced or threaded. The opposite. sup- --Yporting-devices ,areV connected together. by
` stretches of crosswebbings17, thev webbing being passed. around the transverse or base portion 28 Vof .the triangular loops 2-1and riveted, sewed,or l.otherwise lsecured thereto.
.Two V'stretchesv of diagonally-arranged webr-bings 18 are provided, the ends'of thesanie being riveted or otherwise secured to the two end stretches of cross webbings,'as at 24:,
t ieachstretch of diagonally-disposed webbing v being laced or threaded.throughialternate loops at oppositesidesv of the seatand passed l.above and beneathadjoining cross'webbings atv opposite :sides of the seat. f Theitwon stretches of diagonalw'ebbings cross each other at points between the cross webbings,
each stretch passing'alternately above and be- Y A'ne'ath the other; thus keeping said diagonal webbings stretched-theirfull width'and preventingthem turning edgewise when the seat Y is extended for use yasa bed. .The spring v Vsupporting-devices 16 and the webbings 17,
18, Vconstitutean elastic, even surface for the occupants body. v
In the modilicationshown in Fig. .6, the
and smooth v vsupporting-device is formed in threepieces,
ltended `one being a coil-spring 25 havingone end of lthe'wire forming 'the same bent into hook form, as at 26,Y and the other end vbeing eX- Va trifle from the spring,as at 27, `and its end bent into hook form, as at 28 The i hook QGis adapted to engage a triangular loop 29, through which Vthe webbings 17 18, are'` to be laced and thehook 28 is passed'througli Van opening formed ink a metallic securing ",memberySO bent'at aright angle, as'at 81,
i .and adapted tobesecured to the upper ends lof the `bars 8.
The constructions described provide The supporting-devices the Yyielding meinberof the Vsupporting vdevice, andthe base or transverse bar serves to,
hold .the webbings-secuiely thereto iniiatspringlsupported triangular. loop, the apex i of which has Vcoiitiiii'iedior secured thereto tened condition Vat all times, thus''avoiding turning of these fwebbings edgewise. A Vvery important feature of lthese webbings lies in the manner'in which Vthe diagonally-.disposed webbings arearranged with referenceto theftransverse jwebbings,y attention being invited to the' fact thatthevends Vof the transverse and beneathfon'e of the ends zof alternate transverse vwebbin'gs and beneath'- and above i A webbings have lying against tlieirjppposite faces the oppositely-directed portions of the Y' diagonally-disposed :webbin gs, eachofjsaid diagonally-disposed webbings passing 'above' the opposite ends ofthe intermediate-trainsverse webbings, and when the'diagonal.web;Vv bings are properly stretched they will .retain f the transverse webbings in A'flattened s condition byrea'sonof theirA passing through the Y of the triangularly widened' inner YendsV formed loops.V
Althoughthe constructionshereing; shown .Y s and described are believed to b eythose most practicablefor the purpose inten"dej.d',-.itV isj f j apparent that changes inffmin'or@details Yoff construction Vmay be resorted tot? withoutfjdeparting from our;- inventionor sacrificing v-any of the advantages thereof alsothfat ,cerf
