CABINET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1916.
Application filed March 29, 1915. Serial No. 17,722.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLARD B. Goox, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Cabinet, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to cabinets for moving picture projection apparatus, stereopticons and the like, and has reference more particularly to a device of this class which consists of a cabinet comprising side and end walls, a reversible and adjustable top adapted to support a projection apparatus or similar instrumentality, and means for holding the top in a plurality of adjusted positions.
The invention also relates to a cabinet of the class described having a reversible top adapted to carry a projection apparatus in position for use, and so arranged that when the top is reversed the apparatus will be received within the cabinet.
Further, the invention relates to a device of the kind in question in which means are provided for the storage of a plurality of reels, moving picture films, stereopticon slides, records or the like. 7
The object of the invention is to provide a cabinet for use with moving picture apparatus or other devices for the same general purpose, which can be readily moved from place to place, in which the projections or other apparatus may be kept protected from dust, moisture, or injury, which permits the projection or other apparatus to be quickly and easily placed in position for use, which permits the projection or other apparatus to be held in different adjustments so that the line of projection may be regulated at will, and which when not in use may be employed as a table or similar article of furniture.
A further object of the invention is to provide a cabinet of the kind described,
which may have any desired finish or ornamentation, which may be fashioned from wood, metal or other material adapted for the purpose, which is simple and compact in form, and which can be inexpensively produced.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims. 0 Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference lndicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, showing the same having mounted thereon a moving picture projection apparatus in position for use; Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a partial vertical cross section showing the projection apparatus in inoperatlve position, within the cabinet; Fig. t 1s a fragmentary perspective view showing the rear upper portion of the cabinet, with the top carrying the projection apparatus, reversed, as shown in Fig. 3. I
Before proceeding to a more detailed explanation of my invention it should be clearly understood that while I have shown in connection with the preferred embodiment of my cabinet, motion picture apparatus, the device can also be used advantageously with other apparatus such as magic lanterns, stereopticons or the like, or even with devices such as phonographs or other sound-reproducing instrumentalities. I prefer to fashion the cabinet of wood, but needless to say, other materials adapted for the purpose, such as metal, can be employed. The cabinet can be decorated, ornamented, or finished in accordance with special conditions or individual preference.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I have shown for example, herewith, a cabinet fashioned from wood and embodying side walls 20and a rear or end wall 21. At the four corners of the cabinet are posts or uprights 22 of suitably ornamental outline and terminating at the lower ends in feet 23 provided with casters 24, in order that the cabinet may be readily moved from place to place. I provide a bottom or floor 25 secured between the side and end walls, preferably above the lower edges thereof, as
is clearly shown in Fig. 2. The feet of the cabinet extend below the body thereof a suitable distance in order that the cabinet itself may be correspondingly raised above the floor upon which it rests. At the front the cabinet has two vertical frame members 26 suitably fastened to the side walls and extending from the bottom to the top of the cabinet. Intermediate their ends, and substantially at the middle of the front of the cabinet, the frame members are oined by a cross member 27 rigidly secured in position. Adjacent to the floor 25, and below the lower extremities of the frame member 26, the cabinet has at the front a cross frame or sill 28 to which is movably attached by means of hinges 29 a front closure 30, having a knob 31 by means of which it can be manipulated. Rigidly secured to the front closure 30 at the inside thereof, near the lower edge, and normally projecting into the cabinet is a base 32. Secured to the base 32 and the front closure 30 are spaced partitions 33, across the inner edges of which is fastened a slat 34. The partitions form receptacles for reels of film 35 or other articles which it is desired to store in the cabinet. Upon the floor 25 is a sill 36 upon which the base 32 rests when the film receptacle is in its normal position as shown in Fig. 2.
Above the cross member 27 the front of the cabinet is closed by two door sections 37 each secured to one of the frame members 26 by means of hinges 38 and each having a knob 39 by means of which it can be manipulated. In order to secure the door sections -in closed position I' provide each of the same,
near the lower free corner, with a, spring catch which engages the cross frame 27.
The cabinet is provided with permanent top sections 45 and 46 respectively secured to the side walls and between the end wall 21 and the frame members 26. The top space between the top sections 45 and 46 is substantially filled by a movable and adjustable top section 47 having at its side edges at the centers thereof, trunnions 48 movably received in sockets 49 respectively carried by the permanent top sections 45 and 46.v This construction permits the movable top section to be completely reversed upon the axis of the trunnions. The permanent top member 45, near its ends is provided with metalfaced socket recesses 50 each adapted to receive a pin 51 carried by the movable top section and serving to limit the movement of the top. Upon the top is rigidly secured in any suitable manner a motion picture projection apparatus 52, or other device. It will be understood that it is frequently desirable to arrange the apparatus supported by the adjustable top of the cabinet, in positions of different angularity with respect to the horizontal. In order to accomplish this I provide the permanent top member46 with a hinged arm 53 having a plurality of perforations 54 each adapted to receive the projecting end of a bolt slidably mounted in the forward end the movable top is provided with a bolt device 60 similar to that already referred to, and having the bolt arranged to be received in a socket at the forward end of the permanent top section 46, so that the movable top may be locked in a reverse position.
Attached to the permanent top 45 andthe corresponding side wall 20 of the cabinet, by means of extensionhinges 62, is a leaf or cover 63, preferably having the edges beveled or otherwise ornamented, and arranged to be folded upon the upper portion of the cabinet when the movable top is reversed and the projection apparatus is disposed within the cabinet. The cover then assumes a position upon and concealing the'top sections 45, 46 and 47 and projects beyond the edges of the cabinet, which then has the appearance of a table or similar article of furniture and can be used as such.
The top door sections 37 have a dual purpose. They not only give access to the interior of the cabinet but when open permit the unobstructed reversal of the top section 47 and the entrance into the cabinet of the projection apparatus carried by the section 47, as will be readily understood from an inspection of Fig. 2.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A cabinet comprising a compartment having an open front and spaced apart top sections, a platform adapted to form a closure for the space between the top sections, and pivotally mounted midway its ends between said sections, whereby it may be inverted, an
apparatus mounted on one side of said platform and adapted when said side is uppermost to project above the cabinet and when in its reversed position to be inclosed within said compartment of the cabinet, the open front of the cabinet permitting the swinging of said apparatus into and out of said compartment, and the compartment being capable of use for storage when the apparatus is adjusted as for use, a closure for the open front of said compartment when the appa ratus is adjusted to its uppermost position, means carried by the platform for locking the same in obverse or reverse position, means carried by one top section whereby the platform may be adjusted to and held at different predetermined positions, and. a supplemental cover connected with the cabinet and adapted to be adjusted thereover covername to this specification in the presence of ing the joints at the sides of the tilting plattwo subscribing Witnesses. form and form a finished top for the cabinet v WILLARD B. COOK. when the apparatus on the tiltable platform Witnesses; 5 is adjusted into its inclosing compartment. JOHN K. BRAoHvoeEL,
In testimony whereof I have signed my PHILIP D. ROLLHAUS.
