BATHING CAP.
APPLICATION FILED JULYIZ, 1915.

lnventor:
FLORENCE A. BLOCH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BATHING-CAP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1916.
Application filed July 12, 1915. Serial No. 39,289.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FLORENCE A. BLooH, residing at and whose post-otfice address is 127 West One hundred and forty-first street, of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bathing-Caps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved article of manufacture consisting of a convertible cap primarily adapted for the use of women and children in surf bathing.
Broadly stated my object is to render a bathing cap convertible into a bag in which bathing garments, stockings and slippers may be carried, and readily convertible again into a cap.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 shows a side elevation of an article constructed in accordance with my invention it being shown in the form of a cap. Fig. 2 shows the article converted into a bag.
Referring to Fig. 1 the cap 1 is or may be of the usual or any preferred kind and is preferably made of rubber cloth. Its crown is shown surmounted by a frill which, in the normal position of the article, merely constitutes an ornament or decoration. Within this frill, however, the cap is formed with an bpening 2 which may be held closed by a drawing string 3 passed through a hem surrounding the opening, or in lieu of the drawing string an elastic may be employed. When the drawing string is used its extremities may be tied into a bow or knot and, as the string is within the frill, it is concealed from view when the article is worn upon the head or, in the absence of the frill, the bow or knot may be concealed within the opening.
The cap is provided with a lining 4 which is secured to the lower edge 5 of the cap proper and is placed over the head of the wearer when the cap is in its normal position. This lining, however, may be withdrawn from within the crown of the cap into the position illustrated in Fig. 2 when it and the cap proper constitute a bag, access to which is had through the opening 2.
It will be noted that the side of the surface which constitutes the inside of the bag does not come into contact with the head of the wearer when the article is used as a cap. Consequently sand that may have gathered upon the bathing garments and shoes will not necessarily get into the hair of the wearer. Furthermore it is customary for women to wear small tight fitting skull caps in addition to the bathing cap proper. By my invention the lining 4 performs the office of this skull cap in addition to its function of forming part of the bag. It will further be noted that the drawing string 3 may be slipped over the wrist of the user and carried like the ordinary cords of a hand bag.
I claim as my invention As an article of manufacture, a cap, having an opening in its crown, means for closing said opening, and a lining member normally positioned within the crown but capable of withdrawal to form, with the cap proper, a bag or receptacle.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FLORENCE A. BLOOH.
