Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN DRAYTON, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
BEDSTEAD-FASTENING.
Speccation of Letters Patent No.
To all whom t may conce/rn.'
Be it known that I, JOHN DRAY'roN, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Fastening the Posts of Bedsteads to the Rails and also Fastening the Head and Foot Boards to the Posts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specication, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in Which- Figure l, isa perspective view; Fig. 2, shows a coupling of the side rail With the posts; Fig. 3 shows coupling end rail and foot and head board With the posts.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I Will proceed to describe its construction and operation. I construct the end rails with crooked, or curved tenons on each end, which fit into correspending mortises in the posts, as shown at let-ter A in Figs. l and 3, so that these rails cannot be connected, or disconnected With the posts Without turning the posts, and of course cannot be disconnect-ed While the side rails are in their places, and prevent the posts from turning. The side rails are constructed With doWels, or tenons at each end itting into corresponding openings in the 11,722, dated September 26, 1854.
posts, as shown in letter G in Fig. 2 and the side rails and posts are drawn together by means of clamps and Wedges, as shown in letters B and D in Fig. 2; one of the ears of each clamp being fitted into a inortise made for that purpose, in the face of the post, as is shown at letter O in Fig. 2 and the other ear entering a large mortise or opening in the face of the rail, as shown in letter I-I in Fig. 2, the Wedge is driven through the rail, and behind the last mentioned ear, as shown at letters H and D in Fig. 2 thus drawing the rail and post tightly together, and preventing the post from turning, as' shown in letters B and D in Fig. 1.
The end boards are secured to the posts by means of a dovetail tenon, at each end of the board, fitting a corresponding opening in the post, as shown in letter E Figs. 1 and 3.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The manner of fastening the end rails t0 the posts by means of the curved or crookedV tenons, in combination with the clamp and wedge for securing the side rails to the posts as described.
JOHN DRAYTON.
