ABRAHAM MIBROOH AND ADOLPH K1113, 01 NEW YORK, 11. Y.
FOLDING PACKING-30X.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that we, ABRAHAM MIBROCH and ADULI'II Kama, citizens of the United States and ItiSldtiIliS, respectivel of the -'ty oi New York, borough of the ronx in the count of the Bronx and State of hiew York, an of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in tie county and State of New York, have invented a new and Imiroved Foldin Packing-Box, of which the allowing is a all, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to packin boxes of that type which are folded from at blanks into box form when desired for use, and the invention has to deal more particularly with a closing or locking means for boxes of this character.
The invention has for its general objects to improve and sim lify the construction of folding or collapsible packin boxes in which a handle is employed as t e'sole looking means for holding the box closed, the design being such that the cost of manufacture is reduced to a minimum and the box can be easily and quickly folded into box form from a blank and locked closed after receiving its contents.
With such objects in view, and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of )arts which will be set forth with particuiarity in the following description and claim a pended hereto.
In t e accom anying drawing, wh ch illustrates one em odiment of the invention and wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, Fi ure 1 is a pore ective view of the box locied closed by t e handle; Fi 2 is a perspective view showing the hen le in its unlocking position; Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the handle-carrying flap or lid of the box; Fi 4 is a bottom perspective view of this ham e-carrying flacpg Fig. 5 is a perspective view of t e an le removed and Pig. 6 is a view of a blank from which the box is formed.
In the present instance the box is shown as of rectan ular shape, but it is to be understood that t e shape may be varied to suit any desired requirements, and cardboard or any other material may be employed.
Referring to the drawin and more particularly to Fig. 6, the b ank comprises a lpectnoaticn or team rmni.
Application Med I'ebruery 1, 1018, Serial No. 5,458.
Patented Feb. 8, 1916.
body section A and side sections B and G, the body section consistin of a bottom 1, ends) and 3 and a top 4, a l of which parts are integrally connected, the top 4 being made by joining together the ends 5 of arms which extend from the ends of the bottom 1 to form the end walls of the box and the top.
The side section B is provided with a top fla which laps over the to 4 of the box, an it is also provided wit end fla s 7 which fold into the body of the box an engage the end walls 3. The side section C as a top flap 8 which folds over the to lie 3, and end flaps 9 on the side section 8 fo d into the body A of the box and engage the end walls 8 t ereof. The flap 6 carries a handle D which forms the looking or closing device of the box. This handle D comprises a strip having arrow-head extremities 0, each of which includes a air of lugs 11 at opposite sides of the handle to interlock with the ends of a tongue 12 out out in the dept This tongue is formed by a slit 13 out in the flap 6 and disposed arallel with the free ed e 14, and at the en 5 of the slit 13 are ri tangularly disposed slots 15 through w ich the extremities 10 of the handle are inserted and the lugs 11 of the bandle engage under the ends of the tongue while t e middle or grip portion of the handle is disposed over the tongue. This handle has a limited lateral movement in the slots 15 so as to permit the handle to move to and from lockin position. The handle is adapted to inter ock with the top flap 8, which is provided with a rectangn ar openmg 16, the ends of which are provided with slots or recesses 17 between which is formed a ton e 18. By moving the handle laterally t e ends will enga e in the recesses 17, as shown in Fig. 1, an by movin the handie from this position to the position shown in Fig. 2, the top fin is un ocked so that the box can be opene If the handle or handle loop is made of cardboard it may be reinforced on the under side by a qiece of fabric 19 glued thereto, as Shown in *ig. 5.
From the fore oing description taken in connection with t e accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while we have described the principle of operation, together with the device which we now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, we desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A collapsible packing box comprising a the portion of the handle between the enlarged ends projects, the enlarged ends lying between the top of the body and the said recessed flaps, and the other flap which overlies the top of the body being provided with a longitudinal slot through which the handle projects, and one edge of the slot being recessed for permitting the handle to be laterally moved into and out of the recesses to lock and unlock the flaps.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
