Specification of Letters Patent.
ratenteu nel). s, raie.
`Application led March 8, 1915. Serial No. 13,010.
.To all whom v-z't may concern Be it known that I, ERNnsT H. Herrn, a citizen of the United States, residing in-the towniof Montclair, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful improvements in Display-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
f This invention relates to improvements in boxes intended for display of merchandise in order -to effectively advertise the same,
and has for its objects the provision cfa compact shipping box of maximum capacity which box also serves forthe purpose of attractively displaying in a small quantity the goods therein contained.
l am aware that heretofore various hinged display boxes have been devised and no claim is broadly made to such articles, but solely to the particular novel features of the display box as herein set forth.
The invention is fully set forth in the accompanying drawings and specification forming a part thereof in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved display box in display position; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view from lfront to rear showing the same in the shipping position. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the rear ofvsaid box as shown in Fig. 2. Fig. l is an elevation in display position of a modification; and Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view from front to rear of the construction shown in Fig. 4 but in shipping position.
Referring to the drawings and the construction shown therein, the reference numerals 1 1 designate the lower and upper half or section of the display box each of the same being hollow and provided with sliding. vdrawers 2 and 2 respectively, and hinged together by means of hinges 8.` The upper section 1 is provided with an inclined or beveled front face 4t, which is adaptedV when the box is open in the position shown in Fig. 1 to be in vertical alinement with the front face et of the lower section 1. rlhereby any suitable advertising matter may be printed or otherwise shown upon the front of said box when in the open position shown in Fig. 1 in a very attractive manner, as the same constitutes a continuous vertical face.
The Iupper section 1 is provided preferably with a sliding glass top 5 which is adapted to fit in grooves 5 as indicated in Fig. 3, or when the box isclosed to be slipped into the mortise grooves 6', 6 as indicated in the same ligure. Thereby 'for shipping purposes the glass is snugly held,
and liability of breakage is accordingly,
reduced.
The wings or easels 7 7 are adapted when open to bev in vertical alinement with the sides a, a of the box and to close the lateral opening between the top and bottom sections caused by the separation of these two sections and thereby the box is given the appearance of being a solid box of the general dimensions as indicated in Fig. 1. Between the lower surface of said wings 7, 7, when closed, and the top S of said lower' section, is a slit or compartment which is adapted to receive the aforesaid glass cover and protect the same against breakage during shipment.
Suitable knobs 9, 9 serve to permit of the drawers being opened when desired. As shown in Figs. t and, if desired in lieu of wings 7, a suitable locking hinge 10 may be employed, and similar compartments 11 may be provided in either or both drawers. Further, the glass in the modification as shown in Fig. 5 is not removable although obviously the same may be made so if desired.
lThe aforesaid box possesses the obvious advantage of serving both as a shipping box, and as an excellent and attractive display case. Furthermore, the same is very economical to manufacture and has practically no waste space therein, as when the same is being shipped practically the entire capacity of the box is utilized the same as an ordinary shipping case with the exception of that portion of section 1 which has been eliminated by beveling of the face.
Various modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the accompanying claims. Hinges obviously may be concealed by a piece of paper as shown in Fig. 5 or may if desired be counter-sunk. (Not shown.)
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is v1. A sectional display case provided with storage means comprising a base-section, provided with a closed bottom, having a front face vertical to said bottom, a topsection, provided with a closed bottom hinged to said base-section and normally superposed thereon, said top-section having a uni-lateral front face which forms an acute angle with the bottom of said top- 3. In a display case, the combination comprising two sections hinged together and provided with drawers, the front face of one section being inclined and the front face of the other section being vertical when the `('Jopies of this patent may be obtained for ve centseachQby addressing the "Commissioner o1 Patents.
said sections are closed upon each other, lateral spacing wings hinged to one of said sections and;V adapted to be folded against one face of the latter, said wings each being of a length not substantially exceeding one-half- Signed at New York, countv of New York and State of 'New York March, 1915.
