IMPROVEMENT IN SIDE-HILL PLOWS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,054, dated July 18, 1871; antedated July 12, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL C. DAY, of San Jose, county of Santa Clara, State of California., have invented an Improved Side-Hill Plow; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are sutlicient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvements without further invention or experiment.

My invention relates to improvements in that class of side-hill plows in which two plows facing in opposite directions are used, and in which the beam can be revolved about a central point so as to stand in front of either, as desired. My improvement consists in a peculiar method or arrangement for securing' the beam in place after it has been turned to the required position.

In order to explain-my invention so that others can understand its construction and operation, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- A and B represent two plows standing` in opposite directions, their land-sides C being united so as to form one extended land-side. The upper ends of the standards D are secured to a plate, E, which is parallel with the land-side. My invention consists of a band or loop, F, which is secured by a bolt, a, which passes irough the beam from side to side, immediately above the end ofthe plate E. This loop is made sufficiently long to leave a space between the beam and cross- .ends both above and below,.so that when it stands in a vertical position its lower end will embrace the end ofthe plate E and retain it in place. A rod, Q, is attached to the upper end of the loop and reaches back to a lever, H, which is bolted to the beam near its rear end, within easy reach ofthe plowman. B y drawing` this lever back the loop is caused to turn on the blt aso as to stand at an angle and thus releasethe plate E, Apin, I, similar to a king-bolt, is also connected to the lever by a rod or wire, b, and operates in a hole which passes through the beam and into the plate E directly in front ofthe lever H. The same movement of the lever which carries the loop to an angle withdraws the pin I suiiciently to free it from the plate E, so that the beam can then be revolved so as to face in the opposite direction, when, by moving the lever toward the front end of the bea-m, the loop and pin will secure it in the same manner, as above described.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination, with the revolving plate E, of the band F, rod Q, pin I, rod b, and lever H, connected and arranged to operate together, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
