WEST LODI, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 85,982, dated .Tanna/ty 19, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-PLOW AND MARKERCOMBINED.
The VSchedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same. l
To ail whom tt may cancer-n Be it known that I, DAVIDVWYANT, of West Lodi, in the county of Seneca, and State of Ohio, have invented a Combined Corn-Plow Aand Marker; and I do hereby declare thatV the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of one side of the plow and marker, having the shovel-standards arranged for ridging.
Figure 2 is a top view of iig. 1.
Figure 3 is an elevation of one side of the plow and marker, having the shovel-standards arranged for throwing the earth from the centre outward.
Figure 4 is a top view of lig. 3. i
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding partsin the several gures.
This invention relates to a new and useful improvemeut on implements which are particularly designed for light plowing and laying off' land for corn-crops.
The invention consists in alaterally-expansible frame, adjustable or reversible shovel-standards, and a reversible marker, combined, arranged, and adapted to operate as will be hereinafterexplained.-
To enable others skilled. in the art to understand my invention, I will describe its constructionand operation. In the accompanying drawings- A A represent two beams, whichare secured together, at a suitable distance apart, by means of transverse bars B B, so as to constitute a substantial frame.
The cross-bars B B are both provided with supplemental holes a a., and these bars are secured to the beams A Aby means-of screw-bolts, or other removable fastenings, so that when desired, the said beams can be set further apart or adjusted nearer together, according to the Work required to be performed.
To these beams A A the handles C C arc secured, as shown, or in any other suitable manner.
To the inner sides of the ltwo beams A A, at or near their rear ends, shovel-standards D D arev applied, and in advance of these standards, on the outer sides of the two beams, two shovel-standards, D D', are similarly applied. These four standards carry shovel-blades, of the form shown in the drawings, or of any other suitable forrn adapted for light plowing.
The shovel-standards D D are properly spaced by means of spacing-blocks, b l), and' these shovel-standards are all secured in their proper places by means of transverse pivot-bolts, c, and inclined braces d d.
'lhe upper pivot-fastenings, c, and the wooden-pin connections at e e, allow any one or more ofthe standards to swing back, should they meet with a resisting object which would be liable to break or derange the implement.
The wooden pins e e connect the rear ends of the braces ll (l to ears upon the standards, and, while they possess sufficient strength to resist ordinary strain, they will break under extraordinary strain or shock.
The forward ends of the shovel-standards, which are nearest together, have the front ends of their braces d d secured to blocks ff by means of transverse bolts, which pass through the said blocks, and also through the beams A.
In figs. 1 and 2, the blocks f f are applied to the braces ofthe rear standards, inside of beams A A, and in figs. 3 and 4, the said blocks ff, as well as the blocks b b, are applied to said braces. and standards outside of said beams.
In front of the plows, and extending transversely across ,and beyond one side of the plow-frame, is a beam, G, having a vertical rod, G', secured toits outer end. This forms a marker for leaving marks in the surface of the land, in laying ofi' for planting.
rlhe beam G has a hook, g, upon one end, which is hooked into one or the other oi the staples h, on beams A, and secured in place, at right angles to the line of draught, by means of one or the other of the studs i, on top of the said beams.`
A staple and a stud are applied to each beam A, for the purpose of allowing the marker to be changed from one side to' the other of the plow-frame, as circumstances may require.
It will be seen, from the above description, that the rear plows or shovels, as well as the forward plows or shovels, can be set to work at dii'erent distances apart, and that the marker can be changed and set for right and left plowing, as may be required.
Having described my invention,
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is A 1. llhe arrangement, consisting of the beams A A, cross-supports B B, handles C C, shovel-standards D D', joint bracesd c, all constructed and applied in the manner and for the purpose herein described.
2. The arrangement of the marker G, hook g, staples hy 71., beams A A, cross-supports B B, shovelstandards D D', joint-links (l e, bearings ff and c c, all
constructed and applied and operating.as herein described and shown.
DAVID WYANT.
