F. M. BARRIER, OF STEVENSON, ALABAMA.
Letters Patent No. 73,945, dated February 4, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN GULTIVATORS.
To ALL WHoM Ir MAY-ooNcnRN:
Be it known that I, F. M. BARRIER, of Stevenson, in the county 'of Jackson, and State of Alabama, have inyented anew and improved Cnltivator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingl drawings, making a part of this specification, in wbichi Y Figure 1 is af perspective viewof the improvedcultivator.-
Figure 2 is atop View of the same. l l
Figure 8 is a perspective view of one otthe U-shaped brackets.
Similar letters oi' reference indicate corresponding parts in the three gures.
This invention relates to an improvement on the construction and mode of strengthening that class of cultivators, wherein three standards, each carrying a. shovel, are applied to two handles or stiltsand a. beam, the standards being arranged at regular distances apart, and in a gang.
The nature oi' my invention and improvement consists in the employment of metallic U-shaped brackets as a'mcans of setting oi' the two outside standards from and securing them rigidly to the cultiva'tor-beam, as will be hereinafter described. i
To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, Iwill describe its construction and operation. In the accompanying drawings A represents the main beam ofthe cultivator, which is provided with a clevis on its front end, and consti-acted like a common plough-beam; BB are the two handles or stiltsof the implement, which are also constructed and applied to the beam Alike those of a. common plough. Near `the rear end of the beam A, a standard, D, is secured by mortisingits upper end into said beam, and employing a front inclined brace-rod, a, and on the lower end of this beam a.- 'shovcl of any suitable form is secured. On each side of the standard D is a beam carrying another shovcl-pla`te corresponding to the shovel on said standard D. The standard C is secured to the beam A by Vmeans of a bracket, E, and brace=rod, a,and the upper end of this standard C is rigidly secured to the left-hand stiltB, as'shown in the drawings. The standard C', which is on the 1'igh-t-hand side of the beam A, is also secured to this beam by means of a bracket, E, and brace-rod, a,`and at itsA upper end it is secured to the right-hand stilt B. The upper end of the rear standard C is secured to the inner side of its stili; B, and the upper end of the front standard C is secured to the outer side of the right-hand stilt B, as shown. The standards C Cl are set off some distance from the intermediate standard D, and firmly held in this position by the brackets E, braces a, and stilts or handles B. The brackets E, from which' the parts derive the greatest strength, are oi' metal, bent or cast in the U-form shown in the drawings,.and secured to vthe sides of the beam A by means of bolts passing transversely through their bent ends and through the beam A. The standards are iirmly bolted to the outer ends of these brackets, and are thereby set oii` some distance from each other, and rigidly supported in such positions.v
The brackets not only serve as substantial braces for the standards against forward or backward strain, but they serve as oifsets for spacing the standards.
I am aware that wooden blocks have been interposed between the standards of a cultivator and the beam thereof, through which there were bolts passed, which secured the standards, the beam, andthe interposed blocks together. I am also aware that the beams of cultivators have been curved, with offsets upon them, against which the side standards were secured. This latter plan is preferable to the use of wooden blocks, but it necessarily involves, considerablc'labor and expense to produce the beams with oli'scts formed on them; I am also aware that it is not new to secure the upper ends of the side beams of a cultivator to thc handles or stilts, as this has been done before, with the wooden offsets applied between the standards and the beam.
Having described my invention, what .I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The construction, arrangement, and combination ofthe central beam A with its shovel or plough, the side beams C C', with'their shovels or ploughs, the U or archedshaped brackets E E, and .braces a a, all as and for the purpose described.
