tion, such as will cnaole those skilled in the art to which it tippellllflii to make and use the same. I I
This invention relates to casters and particularly to devices of this class designed for use in connection with articles of furniture and other articles having; tubular legs, and the object of the invention to pro vide an improvement in this class of devices wherchv the casters are made ilctachahhi and are held in position by spring clainp de vices which are automatic in operation, \vhcrchv the Pastors may be quickly and easily attached or detached whenever necess:\l a further ohicct being to provide castors with. attacl'iing devices of the class specified. which may l i applied to tubular or hollow legs or supports for articles of furniture or other articles and which are cylindrical in cross section, square or octagonal in form.
'lheinvention is Fully disclosed in the ihilou'iugr specification. of which the acconb pouring drawing forms a part. in which the scparate parts of my improvement are lesighated by suitable refiarence characters in each of the views. and in which:
l inure l is a sectional side view of a'tu hular leg; or support and showing: my imprm'rniont: Fig. 2 a section on the line 2--2 of Fig. l hi 3 a. section on the line of hi 1: 2: Fig. i a plan view of a. spring clamp plain which I employ; and, Fig. 5 a side view of a spring; clamp formed from the pinto shown in Fig. i.
in the accoing'ian ing drawing, .5. have shown at a a leg or support for an article of furniture such as a bed, or any other article. and l have also shown at Y) a caster, comprising a yoke meniher 72 a roller 7) mounted in. the yoke member and a pintle 71" connected with the cross head portion 5 o'l' the "Jolie member 7).
in Elsi practice of my invention, as shown in the drawing. l mount on the pintle 6* a ilisle-slwipial plate 1: on which the cg or support (I rests and said (llSli-Slm'lBMl plate is prelorahly provided with a raised central portion 1". ll also provide two similar spring,

clamp devices (Z, each of which comprises a horizontal top portion (Z a horizontal bottom portion (Z and an inwardlycurved U-Sl1lll3tl or ll-shaped central portion 12*, as clearly shown in Figs. Land 5, and the spring clamp devices (Z are formed from oblong spring plates one of which is shown at (Z in Fig. *1. This plate is provided with an oblong central aperture (Z and with opposite end oblong, apertures (Z, the end apertures (Z being shorter in their longitudi nal dimensions than the central aperture fl", and these apertures form corresponding apertures in the top, bottom and central portion of the spring clamp devices d, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 5.
in n'actice, the spring clamp devices (Z are placed together with the top and bottom members orerlap 'iing and the central portions abutting as shown at (i in Figs. 1, 2 and and the pintle '1) of the caster is passed upwardly through the apertures (Z, J and (Z and the top end or head of the pintle is riveted as shown at. 7) to hold the parts together, and with this construction the spring clamp devices (Z are connected with the 'pintle 7% of the caster and will remain therewith when said caster is detached.
The :ipertures (Z in the top and bottom parts of the spring clamp devices (5 are of greater (llH'IQHSiOHS than the transverse diniensions iii the pintle if, and the central slots 0 in the said. clamp devices (Z are also of greater dimensions than the pintle, and
the spring clamp devices connected therewith into the bottom of the leg or support, until said leg or support rests on the disk-shaped plate as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. In this operation, the spring clamp devices d present foul-corners both at the top and bottom, or eight corners in all, which press firmly on the inner wall of the leg or support; a, as clearly shown at e in Fig. 3, and
this securely binds the caster to the leg or support and prevents any lateral movement of the caster in or on the leg or support, or any movement of the said leg or support on the caster.
Inthe accompanying drawing, I have shown only atubular leg or support, or aleg or support that is circular or cylindrical in cross section, but, it ust be understood that my improved caster attaching device or devices will (ipe'rate in the same way in a square leg or support, or in an octagonal leg or support.
I am aware; that casters of the class described have heretofore been detachably connected with the hollow or tubular legsof articles of furniture, or other articles, by means of spring clamp or attaching devices connected with the casters and inserted into, or forced into said legs or supports but such devices as heretofore made have difiered from mine-in form, construction and operation and have usually permitted lateral movement of the caster in or on the leg, or support, or lateral movement of the leg or support on-the caster whereas with my improvement no lateral movement of the caster is possible, fand no rattle of the parts, or
noise of any kind is possible in'the movement of furniture or other articles, the legs or' supports of which are provided with my improved casters.
Having fully described my invention, what i I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A easier for use in connection with a tubular or hollow leg or support, said caster being provided with a pintle on which is .loosely mounted a plate adapted to bear on the bottom of the leg or support, and two separate spring devices mounted on the opposite sides of the pintle, said spring devices being provided with-inwardly directed top, bottom and central members, the top and bottom members overlapping and the central members abutting, and said top, bottom and 'central members being provided with apertures through which the pintle loosely passes, and the top and bottom portions of said spring dev ces, being adapted to bear at difs rin devices havin to bottom and cen- P a g P tral portions through which the pintle loosely passes and which are adapted to hear at different points on the inner walls of the leg or support at the top and bottom of the pintle.
3. A,caster for use, in connection with'a leg or support for-an article of furniture or other article, said caster being provided with a pintle, two oppositely arranged spring devices loosely mounted on said pintle and provided with outwardly and inwardly directed oops and the top and bottom loops of whi -l1 are adapted to bear on the inner walls of the leg or support and the other loops being adapted to form central bearings for said spring devices. p
4. A caster. for use in connection with a leg or support for an article of furniture or other article, said caster being provided with a pintle, two oppositely arranged spring devices loosely mounted on said pintle and device presenting four spring loops which bear on the inner walls of the leg or support.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as, my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 15th day of September 1915.
