CASTER.
f Application filed March 15, 1923. Serial No. 625,240.
To ZZ vwhom t may concern:
Be it known that I, KAsrMrnnZ GLowAsKr, a citizen of Poland, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to casters, more particularly to casters having a ball roller and its object is to provide a caster of simple and durable construction which will not break or sag under heavy furniture.
This object, and other advantageous ends which will be described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a fragmentary side elevation of a furniture leg having my caster applied thereto,
Figure 2 a plan View of the caster shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 a section on line 3 3 of Figure 2, and
Figure 4 a view similar to Figure 3 showing a modified form.
Referring to the drawings, l is the leg of any piece of furniture to which my caster 2 is secured by screws 3 or other securing means passing through holes 4 in the caster. The caster comprises a top plate 5 and a bottom plate 6 having annular flanges 7 and 8. Flange 7 on top plate 5 embraces flange 8 on bottom plate 6 to prevent horizontal displacement. The bottom plate is provided with an opening 9 in which a ball l0, of a diameter slightly greater than the opening, is seated. A spacer ring 1l is interposed between the plates to prevent the ball from binding against the top plate.
The opening in the spacer ring is preferably` shaped to conform to the spherical shape of the ball as shown at 12. The top plate is secured to the bottom plate by rivets 13 or other securing means.
In Figure 4 I have illustrated a modified form of caster which includes a top plate 5?. a bottom plate 6EL having the flanges omitted which are illustrated in Figure 3. In all other respects the caster is similar to th at shown in Figure 3 and I have therefore given corresponding parts similar reference characters.
In assembling my caster, the ball is seated in the opening of the bottom plate 6. The spacer ring is placed around the ball and the top plate is placed on the spacer ring so that its annular flange 7 will embrace the annular flange S of the bottom plate. Rivets 13 are then passed through the rivet holes and riveted to the plates. After the caster is assembled and riveted, holes 4 for the screws are drilled and countersunk, Similar steps of assemblage are taken to assemble the modified form in Figure 4 with the exception that no annular flange around the side is to be considered.
lNhile I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come Within the scope of the appended claims.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
l. A caster comprising a top plate having an annular flange; a bottom plate having an opening and an annular flange, the flange on the top plate embracing the flange on the bottom plate; a ball of a diameter greater than the opening disposed between the plates and seated in the opening; a spacer between the plates, and means for securing the top plate to the bottom plate.
2. A caster comprising a top plate; a bottom plate having an opening; a ball of a diameter greater than the opening disposed between the plates and seated in the opening; a spacer ring between the plates surrounding the ball, and means for securing the top plate to the bottom plate.
3. A easter comprising a top plate; a bottom plate having an opening; a ball of a diameter greater than the opening disposed between the plates and seated in the opening; a spacer ring between the plates surrounding the ball; means for preventing horizontal movement of the top plate relatively to the bottom plate, and means for securing the top plate to the bottom plate.
4. A caster comprising av top plate; a bottom plate having an opening; a ball of a diameter greater than the opening disposed between tie plates and seated in the opening; a spacer ring between the plates sur- In Jestmony whereof I have signed my rounding the ball; Ineens for preventlng name to tlns specleatlon 1n the presence O houzontal movement of the top plate relatwo subserlmng Wltnesses.
