Be it known that I, CHARLES WEsTLEY MoitRis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pintle-Retainers, of which the iollowingis a speciiication.
This invention relates to pintle-retaining means whereby the pintlc o'l a caster can be securely held in various sizes of tubular posts, the invention relating especially to retaining means for use with casters used in connccti on with metal beds.
With this object in view the invention comprises certain details of construction and peculiar combination and arrangement of parts as will be fully set forth in the following spcciiication, and pointed out in the claim,

In carryingV out my invention I employ a yoke A, which is stamped from a single piece of stout metal and comprising the vertical arms A and the top horizontal connected member A2. In the lower ends of the arms is held a shaft B, upon which is mounted a ballbearing caster-roller C, the hub C of which is made of metal, and the periphery or tread C2 material which will not rust, and to holdthe tread upon the hub and prevent its slipping I provide thiv hub with a peripheral rib C3, which fits a socket formed in the inner surface of the periphery or tread.

When the roller is connected to the yoke, the balls and disks are iirst arranged in position and the roller inserted between the arms of the yoke. lhe shaft is then passed through the said arms and roller, after which the ends are headed, which securely lock all the parts in position.
'lo the horizontal portion of the yoke is connected a pintle D, which projects vertically thercfrom, and fitting upon the pintle and resting against the horizontal member of the yoke is a ball-bearing supporting member E, upon which rests the lower end ofthe bed-post F. The su porting member comprises a lower plate which is preferably stamped from a single piece of metal and has an annular semispherical-shaped groove E2,
lwhich provides a raceway in which are held antifriction-balls G, and the upper plate E3 of Ithe support is also stamped from a single piece of metal and has a groove E, similar to the groove t2 of the plate E', andthe ed e of the plate E3 overlaps the extreme ed e o the plate E, which completely houses t e balls and prevents the ingress of dust and dirt. To provide an arrangement by which the caster may be connected to various size tubular bed-posts and also to hold the-sections of the supporting member together, I employ a pintle-retai'ner H, which is constructed of two flat spring-arms H,Ieach arm bein stamped from a single piece of metal inthe b ank form shown in F ig. 7 of the drawings, and the cen ter portion of each arm is somewhat enlarged and provided witha central o ening H2.
The pintle-retainer, as be ore stated, is formed of two-arms H', which are riveted together .a-t their center portions, so that they will extend at right angles from each other in the form of a cross, and when thus arrahnged each arm is bent downwardly from the center and their extreme ends bent inwardly-tdprovide foot portions H3, which engage the up-l per plate of the-supporting member and hold the sections together. A pin I `passes through one of a series of apertures D' in the pintle and is engaged by .the central portion ofthe pintle-retainer or arms of the same,
which securely holds the pintle-retainer in tainer serves the double purpose of holding the plates of the supporting member together and also as means for connecting the intle to the post of the bed, and it will be lilrther seen that by pressing the upper end of the pintleretainer down upon the pintleithe arms H will be bent or bowed outwardly and iighly efficient device that is capable of ready and easy attachment, and whenin position will be securely and ermanently held against displacement, it eing understood that it is onlyv necessary in connecting the l.casterv to a bedepost to insert the upper end of the .pintle-retaner in the lower end of the post, and then by allowing the weight of the esame x bed to rest thereon the pintle will be readily pushed and locked in position.
In practice I propose to recess ther ends of the foot portions of the arms of the pintle retainer to snuglylit the pintle, as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, which will prevent any lateral movement or displacement of the lower ends of the arms.
