KNOCKDOWN STAND, STOOL, OR THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 16, 1932.
Application filed July 17, 1911. krial no. 638,881.
To all whom lit may concern:
Be it known that I, Josnrnc F. L. URL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Knockdown Stand,Stool, or the Like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a partof this specification.
My invention relates to metal furniture, and particularly to the construction of metal stools, stands or other similar articles of the knockdown type, but is not restricted to such use.
The object of'my invention is the provision of an improved article of furniture of this'character, which is simple, strong and durable in its construction, inexpensive of manufacture, and capable of having' the parts thereof easily and quickly assembled inset up form or separated and compactly packed for storing, shipping, or the like.
The invention is fully described in the following specification and. while, in itsbroader aspect it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stand embodying my invention with a watercooler supportedthereby. Fig. 2 is an en- I larged inner view of portions of a leg and the top ring of the stand-"in engagement, and Figs. 3 and 4 are sections on the lines It fer-ring to'the drawings, 1 designates the legs, 2 the top 'rim or member, and 3 the leg bracing member of a stand, stool or the like embodying my invention. member 2 is preferably formed of a narrow strap-like strip of sheet-metal, which is bent into a ring or othershape, as may be desired, with its ends fastened together in any suitable manner, as at 4, and has its lower edge rolled inwardly to provide a ledge orfiange 5 therein upon which a water-cooler 6, or other article may rest. Each of the legs 1 comprises a strip of sheet-metal which is preferably of U or channel shape in crossthe shoulders and hooks 9 of the legs.
The topsection, with its channel disposed inwardly, and has its upper end portion flattened or substantlally so, as at 7, to adapt it to rest fiatwise against the outer side of the member To adapt the legs to separably sup? port the member 2 the fiattened'portion 7 of each, which bears against the member side. is offset outwardly from the body or subjacent' portion of the leg to form a shoulder 8, which is preferably tapered or slightly inclined. as indicated, for the purpose hereinafter described. The ppper ends of the leg portions 7 are bent inwardly preferably'in hook shape, as shown at 9, to adapt them to engage over the upper edge of the member 2. The upper edge of the member 2 is preferably provided with equi distantly spaced notches 10 for the hooked endsf9 of the legs to seat in, so that the upper ends of the legs and the top edge of the member 2 will be substantially flush. as shown. The hooks 9 and shoulders 8 of the legs are so spaced that when the former are.
hooked over the upper edge of the member '2 and the lower end portions of the legs then forced inward to proper 11 right position the shoulders 8'thereof wi l he forced under the rounded lower edge of said memher and exert ,a. wedge-like, action thereon in oppositionto the hooks 9. thus causing the member to be firmly gripped between member 3 which holds the legs in locked engagement with the member 2 .is shown in the present instance as being formed of 'strapmetal which is bent'in rectangular form with 'the corners thereof looped out-' ward to project within the leg "channels and engaged over studs or books 11 in said channels, as indicated.
It is evident that to assemble a stand, stool or the like constructed in accordance with my invention, it isonly necessary to engage the upper hooked ends 9 of the legs over the upper edge of the member 2 within the notches 10, if such notches be provided in.
said member, and then to draw the legs inwardly to set up position so as to force the shoulders 8 ther'eofunder the lower flanged edge of the member 2 whereby such member is firmly engaged between the shoulders} and hooks 9 of the legs. When the legs have been placed in such position thetying member 3 is slipped down over the The -not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the 11 within the leg channels to prevent an out-ward movement of the legs until released by said member.
It is apparent that this forms a very simple, light and cheap construction of stand for water-coolers or other articles, 'or
I I for stools or the like, and is capable of being easily and quickly set up or knocked down as desired.
I wish it understood that my invention is 7 claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. In an article of the class described, a top member, legs for said member having their upper ends provided with opposing 'portions which coiiperate to grip said member when one portion is engaged to said member and the legs are drawn inwardly to' set up position, the lower of said portions having wedge-like coaction with the top member-when the legs are drawn inwardly,
and means :lfor securing the legs in locked engagement with said member.
2. In an article of the class described,-a top member, channeled metallic legs for said member, said legs having their upper end portions flattened to conform in cross-section to the shapeof the coacting portions of said member. and provided with oppos ing shoulders which cooperate to grip said member .When one shoulder is'engaged over the same and the legs are drawn inward to set-up position, and means for securing the legs in locked engagement with said member.
3. In an article of the class described, a
rim having an inturned flange at its lower edge, legs having their upper ends hooked for engaging over portions of the rim and having shouldered portions adjacent said hooked portions for wedge-like en-- gagement with the lower flanged edge of the rim when the legs are drawn inwardly from extended position with their hooked portions inengagement with the rim, and
means separately attached tothe legs for retaining the same in rim gripping position.
4:. In an article of the class described, a rim formed of strap-metal and having its lower edge rolled inwardly to form an article supporting ledge, canneled legs having their upper end potrionsflattenedto lie against the outer side of the rim and having portions hooked-over the rim and portions extending under the rim to support the same, and means separately attached to the legs. .below said rim to retain the same in grip ing engagement with the rim, said legs eing adapted when released by said means and swung outwardly relative to the rim to release the latter.
5. In an article of the class described, a top rimmember, legs for such member having their upper ends adapted to separably the legs for holding the same in rim gripping position.
' In testimony whereof, I havehereunto' signed my namev to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
