IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR OPERATING FANS.

Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,788, dated July 4, 1871.

To all rwhom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. BRETON, of Baltimore, of the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for Operating Fans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side, and Fig. 2 a front elevation.

This invention consists in an improvement in the class of fans which is known as Automatic, and is commonly applied to tables of sewingmachines and the like, in such a manner as to be vibrated by means of a cord connecting with a treadle. 'lhe invention consists in the construetion of the device for holding the fan, which may be, and preferably is, of the ordinary kind; this holder is so constructed, and is so provided with elastic holding devices, as to adapt it to various sizes of fans. It is also provided with a series of hooks on its under side to permit the adjustment ofthe treadle-cord, corresponding to the size of fan the force necessary to operate it, and other conditions it is unnecessary to specify.

. I will now proceed to describe this device, in connection with others necessary to complete the apparatus.

Referring to the drawing, a is a clamp provided with a set-screw, I), so that it may be attached to a table, c. d is a standard extending upward from the top of the clamp. e e are prongs secured to the upper end ofthe standard, between which prongs is pivoted a fan-holder, j', the same being a bar grooved lengthwise of its upper side for the reception of a fan-holder, g, and provided with elastic receivers h to hold fan-handles of various sizes. The holder is provided with hooks along its mider side to allow of shifting the point of attachment of the treadle-cord, so as to vary the throw of the fan, or for other plnposes. 'i are fingers extending from opposite sides of the standard d. j is a spring connecting an eye, h, set in the lower side ofthe fan-holder f, with one of the fingers i. l is a cord connecting the upper end of the fan-holderf with a treadle m supposed to be placed upon the iioor in a convenient position to be worked by a person sitting at the table opposite the fan. The working of the treadle draws the fan downward and spring j draws it upward. 'lwo iingers, t', are employed, in order that, when the fan-holder is turned the other way in the prongs e, as it is sometimes desirable, there may be on the same side as the spring j a means of attaching it to the standard d. One of the prongs e is extended as shown at e1, and turned over as shown at e2, in order that the spring j may be attached to it above the fanholder, if preferred. The treadle-board is hinged in a recess formed in a block, and shaped so as to conform more or less to the shape of the foot. This block may be placed in any convenient position on the floor, and forms an independent support for the treadle while protecting it from external injury. Y

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In an automatic-fan apparatus, the holder i f provided with the elastic receivers hh, and shaped as and for the purpose specified. 2. The treadle-board, hinged in a recess formed in a block which is detached or disconnected from other parts of the apparatus, as speciiied.
