BUCKLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 1l, 191W.
Application led October 21, 1914. Serial No. 867,835.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, MYRON B. HAMMOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do declare the following` to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in buckles and the primary object of the invention is to provide a buckle which has improved means incorporated therein for preventing overthrow of the clamping lever.
Further objects of the invention are to provide stop means which employs less wire than customary; and less elastic as well, enabling the elastic to be also sewed close to the bottom bar of the buckle; to locate the stops at the top of the buckle, and to otherwise generally improve, simplify and economize in the cost of production of buckles of the type set forth.
In the drawings: Figure l is a front elevation of a buckle constructed in accordance with the present invention; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. l, showing the clamping lever in open position; Fig. 4 is a side edge elevation of Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the bottom bar of the buckle.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention the bottom bar l is formed to have its ends extended outwardly1 and then inwardly toward each other to provide upper parts 2 which are parallel to the bar l and spaced therefrom and have the free end portions 3 thereof bent at substantially right angles. The clamping lever et has V-shaped slots 5 and 6 formed in the angular portion 7 thereof which slots are between the row of teeth 8 and the sockets 9 for the parts 2 of the bar l.
By reference to Fig. 2 of the drawings, it will be seen that the ends 3 of the bar l provide stops which limit the throw of the clamping lever 4 by engaging the under face of the latter. This stop means for the clamping lever prevents the teeth 8 of the portion 7 from overshooting the bar l against which latter said teeth bind or force the webbing.
It will be noted that the bottom bar 1 is devoid of any downward projections, which thereby allows the webbing to be sewed close thereto, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4.
The present device not only provides a pair of stops, one for each end of the clamping lever, but also locates the stops at the top of the bar l, leaving the latter free of projections. Less wire is required to make the structure than in cases where a single stop is provided and which projects down from bar 1, and less elastic as well, since, as aforestated, the elastic can be sewed up close to the bar l.
The degree to which the ends 3 are bent is immaterial, but I prefer to dispose them in such manner that they will be engaged by the under face of the clamping lever by the time the clamping teeth are directly opposed to the bar l.
What is claimed is:
In a buckle, a bottom bar made entirely of wire having its ends extended outwardly and inwardly toward each other and spaced from said bar and from each other to form short portions parallel to said bar, the extreme ends of said portions being further bent outwardly at an angle to form a pair of spaced stops which latter have free outer ends that terminate in front of and adjacent to said bar, and a clamping lever pivoted to said portions between the stops and the said outward end extensions of the bar and provided with an angular portion which cooperates with said bar in and is movable through the space between said stops, so that when the innerf'ace of said lever en gages said stops, said angular portion of the lever is in clamping position.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MYRON B. HAMMOND.
