 Maren-Box HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Ja, 4, 1916,
Application filed June 10, 1914, Serial No. 844,148.
ToaZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOLDEN RINGWALT HoUerrroN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the Stateof Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Box Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in match box holders and has particular ref erence toa device for detachably'holding a match box in a partially open condition to expose the matches for ready withdrawal from the box.
.One' object of the invention is to provide an improved construction o-f holder that will permitof the ready attachment or detachment of the box wherebyan empty boxmay be removed and a box, filled with matches attached with facility, and to also provide an exceedingly simple and cheap construction of holder thatmay be manufactured at a minimum cost whereby the device maybe given away, if desired, foradvertising purposes.
The accompanying drawing illustrates the invention wherein,
Figure 1, shows a front face view of the device with a box of matches attached thereto. Fig. 2, illustrates the holder in perspective with the casing of the box attached thereto,a portion of which latter is broken away to show the means forsuppo-rting the box proper in the casing. Fig. 3, shows the holder and the casing in vertical section and the box proper in position within the casing, and Fig. 4, illustrates the blank from which the holder is formed.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 5, designates a base plate, preferably of cardboard, because of its cost, but which may readily be stamped from sheet metal. The outline of the base is also a matter of preference and may be other than that shown, but for simplicity it is shown substantially rectangular. At the lower edge, the base plate 5, has a movable tongue 6, anda fold or crease 7, is Provided in the material of which the base and tongue is formed, at the joinder of the base with the tongue. The tongue 6,has a crosswise fold 8, therein between its free end and the base plate,
and from said fold to the free end, there is provided a flange or ledge 9, for a purpose which will presently be explained. Between the fold 7, at the bottom of the plate, and the opposite or top edge, said plate is provided with slit Z10, which extends down-.
ward ly from a point to one side of an imaginary central line drawn vertically across the plate and, which then extends upwardly after crossing said linea-nd terminates at the other side of said central line. This slit severs the base so as to produce a movable clipor flap ll, with a down-pointing'freeedge 12,, which latter may be readily sprung outwardly from the plate. It will therefore be noted that the clip or flap 11, has position on the plate directly over the,tongue.6., 7
The match box which the device is desig ed} to hold comprises a casing having front and rear walls 13 and 14 respectively,
and also having parallel side walls 15 and 16,; which connectthe front and rear walls. At. the; upperand lower ends the casing is entirely open. for theouternfaces ofthev side walls 15 and In practice it is customary 16 of the casing to be provided with a material 17,- to'ignite the, matches by frictional contact therewith. The matches 18, arev retamed in a receptacle in theusual way which receptacle has a rear wall 19, parallel side walls 20, and end walls '21 and 22, so that one side of the receptacle will be left open. This match receptacle slides like a drawer into the casing,t he front wall 13, of which latter serves as a cover toretain the matches in the receptacle.
To attach the match box to the holder the casing is presentedwith its rear wall 14, against the flat front surface of the base plate. The clip or flap 11, is then sprung outwardly and the casing is pushed upwardly directly over or above the fold 7, that oins the tongue and base." The movable tongue 6, is next bowed and turned upwardly into the open lower end of the casingso that the lower edge 24, of the casing will rest in the fold 7. l/Vhen this has been done the tongue 6, will have an upwardly inclined position in the casing and the crosswise fold 8, will bear againstthe outer or front wall 13, of the casing while the'fiange or ledge 9, will the clip in lapped engagement with the upper edge of the casing rear wall. When the match receptacle is pushed down inside poof the casing the end wall 22, of the receptacle will seat On the flange or ledge 9, of the tongue which forms a stop and a support for the receptacle. When in this position the upper end of match receptacle with the vmatches therein will be exposed so that the matches may be conveniently withdrawn. By providing a flexible tongue on the holder, the same may readily be bowed and tucked up inside of or withdrawn from the casing .toattach or detach the casing.
It will be noted that the casing is secured to the base at both the upper and lower edges of its rear wall and that the tongue that engages the lower edge must be movable to enable the upper edge to be inserted under the clip 11 Having described my invention what I claim is,
1. A holder for a two part match box which latter has an outer inclosing casing and a slidable match receptacle that slides longitudinally in the casing,--said holder comprising a base plate against which the rear wall of the casing of the box may seat and provided with a downwardly-projecting engage the upper edge of the rear wall of clip between its upper and lower edges to the match-box casing, said base plate also having a movable tongue formed at its lower edge and extending in an upwardly and outwardly inclined direction from said lower edge said movable tongue being toldable up into the box casing and having its upper end inturned to form a ledge inside of the box casing on which the end of the match receptacle may seat.
2. A match box holder comprising a plate having a yielding clip projecting therefrom and at its lower edge said plate being provided with a flexible tongue that projects upwardly and outwardly and is provided at its upper end with a flange that extends inwardly toward the plate to form a ledge in a plane between the yielding clip and the lower edge of the plate.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
