To all cclzom-zltmag concern." I
Be it known that I, JAMES H. PERRIN, a citizen of the United States, and residing in the cityof Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a C01- lapsible Stool ConcealedWithin a Walking- Stick, of which the following is a specification.
i This invention relates to foldablestools, and the principal object is to provide a stool thatwill fold into a small compass and be concealed within a walking stick.
It is also an object to provide a foldable stool with a plurality of hinged arms and legs which are operatively connected by means of a central reciprocating r0 It is a further object to provide a folding stool with a flexible seat which can be read ily disengaged from the seat supporting arms and rolled or folded into a small compass, and be concealed within a walking stick together with the rest of the structure.
More specifically inthe drawings accom panying this s 3ecificationFigure 1 is a side elevation showing the complete stool set up read for use. Fig. 2 is a view taken from the same side showing the legs folded bv extending the central rod outwardly. Fig. 3 is a similar elevation showing the device completely folded. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail of the body portion and the hinged connections. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail of thehead of the rod. Fig. 7 is a detail of the hinging of the arms to the body portion. Fig. 8 is an enlarged detail showing how the leg braces are slidably connected to the legs.
More specifically in the drawings, 10 designates the body "portion consisting of a substantially cylindrical member having a central longitudinal bore therethrough to form a sliding engagement with the reciprocating rod 11, which is provided with a head 12, and a foot bracket 14.f
In the drawings four legs designated 15 are shown to the stool, these being preferably formed of sheet metal, having a curved outer face 16 and parallel sides 17, this face and sides being preferably closed in the bottom to form a foot 18. Suitable bores are carried through the sides 17 0f the leg adjacent their upper ends, through which are carried pivot pins 19, which are carried through lugs 20 depending from thebody v Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Dec. 28, 1915.-
portion 10. These lugs are so disposedbe low the shoulders 21 formed upon the body portion of the-terminal, edge 22 that the face butts against this shoulder, acting as a stop when the legs are extended in operative position.
The arms 24 are preferably formed of metal of similar cross section, as the legs,' are preferably of less length, and are hinged to lugs 34 on the upperportion of the body member by means of pivot pins 25, recesses beingcut in the upper portion of the body,
against .which the lower and inner. edges of" the ,arms abut to formlimiting stops for said arms. The outer and upperends of the arms are preferably formed or have. brazed thereto a head Qtiwhich engages with. suitable eyes in the flexible square of fabricare hinged to the head of the rod by means of pins 31, one strap extending to each arm 24 and hinged thereto by a pin 32.
The lower straps 33 are pivotally connected to the foot 14 on the rod by means of pins, 44, and these straps at their outer ends are pivotally secured by means of a hinged pin 35 to a strap 36, which is slidably mounted in engagement with the lower portion of the leg, being held in this relation by means of a pin 37. The lower end of this strap 36 is off-set and provided with a toe 38 which is adapted to rest upon the foot 18 of the legwhen the legs are extended, the foot being built slightly cup-shaped to receive the toe 38 to limit the downward movement of the strap 36 and form a support for the latter.
The stool is shown in folded relation and inclosed within the tubular structure 40 of the walking stick, the face 16 of the limbs being so formed that they closely fit within the inner periphery of the walking stick.
The operation of the device will be readily understood from the drawings, the straps 33 forming a double function of not only drawing the legs together to fold the stool, but
when extended, limit the distance the legs are connected to each llmb of the stool. The upper straps 30 are extended,;and they-also act' 'as to prevent the collapse of the stool should the stops on the shoulders fail. -Theextension of these straps is necessary so that in the positive movement of drawing 'inthelegs, When this is accomplished, the arms are still 7 'eXtendedin-the positionshown in'Fig. 2, further extension of the rod sliding the straps 36 in relation to the pin 37 and'positiv'ely drawing inthe arms 24:.-
1 What I claim is:
1. In ,a foldahle stool having a sleeve, a
plurality of legs pivotallysecured .to' one end of the sleeve, a plurality ofarms pivot v ally secured to the oppositeend ofthe sleeve,
a reciprocating rod. mounted .to slide in the sleeve,"a nd linksqconnecting the upper end of Said rod'lto the arms, slidable members" on. the legs and links .connectmg said sl1dable members to the loiver end of the rod.
2; In a fold able stool having a 'sleeve', a plurality of legs pivotalljsecured to one end of the sleeve, a plurality of arms pivotally secured to the opposite "end "of the; sleeve, a reciprocating rod mountedto slide inthe sleeve, and links connectingthe upper i end of said'rodto the arms, a footbr'aeket (lopies'of this patent may be obtained for onthe lower end of therodj slidahle members on the legs, links connecting said members to the footbracket, means on the legs for limiting the movement of the slidable members. a
3. A folding stool, comprising a sleeve, a seriesof arms pivoted to the upper end-0f the sleeve, a rod slidable in the sleeve, links connecting'the upper end of the'rod' with the arms, a plurality of legs pivoted to the lower end of the sleeve formed with channels on their inner; faces, an inturned foot on the lower end o feach leg, 'slidable members arranged in the channelsof the legs, con neo'tions' between the rod and said sli'dable members",*-\vhereby the latter will be caused toTbear uponthe fe'etiwhenthe legs are spread "and the'rod is in its lowermost position.
In Witness that I clilll ll the fore oiiu I have hereunto subscribed 'my' name "this l-l-th day of March, 1913.
