To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE S. SHERWOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelbyville, in the county of Shelby and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Camp-Stools and Walking-Sticks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object an improved construction of combined camp stool and walking stick, composed of comparatively few and simple parts that may be folded up and readily secured together, so as to form a sightly cane or to be spread apart and linked together to form. a camp stool, whenever desired.

The invention consists in certain constructions and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device, shown arranged as a walking stick, parts being broken away Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device, arranged as a camp stool; Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation of the lower section of the staff, with the parts folded one upon the other; Fig. 4 is a view of said lower section with the members spread apart; and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the hinged brace connection.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The staff of the device is constructed in two sections 1 and 2,. adapted to be secured together in longitudinal alinement by means of a tubular screw threaded extension 3 one section working in a socket in the end of the other section. The lower section 2 is provided with any desired type of ferrule 4 at its lower end and the upper section 1 is formed at its upper end with a socket 5 adapted to contain the canvas or other fabric, designed to form the seat of ,the device when arranged The socket 5 is ordinarily closed by means of a screw cap 6 which may be of any form and ornamentation.

The lower section 2 of the staff embodies two preferably half round members pivoted by any desired form of rivet, and arranged with their flat faces adjacent each other, so as to form a substantially round structure, when folded one upon the'other. In changing from the cane structure to the camp stool, the two members of the lower section 2 are spread apart. The upper section 1 is, as shown, formed with two obliquely extending notches 8, that are designed to receive the crotch portions of the lower section, when the latter is in its spread out condition. By this means the upper section and the two members of the lower section may be detachably connected together, so as to form a tripod arrangement.

In order to brace the arts when spread out to form a camp stool? I provide lunged braces. The main members 9 and 10 of the hinges are jointed together at their ends and are pivotally secured to the respective members of the lower section 2, and within slots in said members that are adapted to be used as pockets within which the hinges ma be folded so as to be out of the way and helil in an inconspicuous position, ready for use.

I intermediate of their ends as-indicated at 7 lated between its ends as shown with a vertically breaking joint and is connected to themember 9 by means of a laterally acting hinge oint, so that it may be swung against the main members and folded up into a comparatively small compass to be stored away with the other members in the pockets 7. When spread out, this hinged member 12 is adaptedv to have its hook end 13 engaged with a stud or eye 14 on the lower end of the upper section 1. The length of the two sections of the hinged member 12 and the hinged connection of one of said members with the members 9 are such that the parts 12 at their jointed ends will lie flush with the jointed ends of the parts 9 and 10 when all of the parts are in folded condition, as illusof the section 1 by the screw cap 6.

From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be seen that I have provided a very simple and cheap construction of combined camp stool and walking stick which will be particularly useful to tourists and to spectators of games or the like, where the seating facilities are inadequate.

As illustrated in the drawings, one of the members of the lower section 2 is provided with a pocket in which a hook 16 is designed to be received. In the assembled position of the parts for use as a camp stool, the hook 16 extends over the upper section 1 at the crotch portion of the stool so as to securely hold the parts together.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A combined camp stool and walking stick consisting of a staff constructed in sections one of said sections being provided with a screw threaded extension fittlng in the end of the other section, one of saidsections be ing designed to be spread out, and the other section being provided with a socket forming a seat and a cap closing said socket, means for holding said sections in a tripod arrangement, and a triangular seat, the corners of which are designed to be held in stretched condition by the parts of the threaded extension, the third corner of said seat being held in said socket by the said cap.

2. A combined camp stool and walking stick, comprising a staff constructed in two detachable sections one of which embodies two members pivotally connected together and each formed below the pivot with a pocket, and the other section being formed with means for detachably connecting it intermediate of its ends to the pivot of the latter, a seat adapted to be secured on the upper ends of said membersand the other section, two braces connected at their ends to the said members respectively and jointed together at their adjoining ends with a vertically breaking joint and adapted to fold upwardly into the said pockets when the members are closed one upon the other, and a third brace having a laterally acting hinge connection at one end with one of the other braces, said third brace consisting of two members also having a vertically breaking jointed connection with each other and the outer one of which is formed with a hook, and the other section being provided at its lower end with a pin adapted for engagement by said hook.
