Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIOE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LlFTlNG-JACKS.
Specitication forming part ol' Letters Patent No. 116,534, dated July 4, 1871.
To alt whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, HAMILTON BALLENTINE, Ot' the city of Philadelphia and State of Iennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage-Jacks; and I do hereby declare the iOlloWing tO be a full, clear, and exact description Ot' the same, reference beingI had to the accompanying dra-Wing making a part Ot' this specification, in Which- Figure l represents a perspective view of the jack. Fig. Z represents a vertical section through the same.
Similar letters of reference, Where they Occur' in the separate 1i gures, denote like parts of the ljack in the drawing.
My invention relates tO the use Of a tubular case and a notched rod guided and moving therein, and ope 'ated by a lever externally arranged thereon, having a lever-pawl pivoted to it, so that the Weight on the jack will tend to hold the levenpawl in the notches of the rod7 as Will be explained.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I Will proceed tO describe the same with reference to the drawing.
A represents a base or foot, to which the tubular supporting-piece B is attached. In this supportin gpiece orcase B there is placed the notched rod (l, which snugly fits into the interior of said case; and that it may move up and down therein without turning around, a vertical slot is ma de in the case, in which a guide-pin or stud, a, in the rod O, may move, and thus guide said rod Or bar. Opposite the slot in the case that the guide4 pin a moves in there is another vertical. slot, b, Opposite the ratchet-notches o in the lifting-rod or bar O, for the lever-pawl Z to Work through in takin into said notches o. To lugs o on the ease B is pivoted, as atf, the hand-lever D; and to this hand-lever is 1v ivoted,las at g, the leverpawl d, and so that when the lever l) is up, as shown in Fig. 2, the pivot g of the lever-paavl d shall be inside oi' the pivot fof the hand-lever l), and thus canse the .veight On the jack to hold the lever-pawl in its notch. The bar or rod C may be split or branched at its top, as ath, so as to form a seat for aearriage-axle to rest on.
By making the case of tubular form common gas-pipe may be used for the purpose, which is quite cheap, and far better than any cast-iron case, which is apt to be broken even by ordinary handling. The round rods or bars are easily and cheaply made of round rolled iron, and the case and notched bar, so made, are very compactand quite strong. The case and bar may, however, be Oi' other than a round form, it' so preferred.
Havingthus tully described my invention,what I claim therein as new, and desire tO Secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination Ot' the tubular slotted case B, the notched and guided rod or bar G, and the hand and pawl-levers I) d, arranged to Operate.
the ewitln substantially in the manner and for the purpose described. l
