Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. FnRRIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Central City, in the county of Merrick and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Forms for Stacking Grain or the like, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to forms for use in molding or producing grain stacks or the like, and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character embodying a simple and cheap construction, yet etlicient in carrying out its intended use.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the device that it may be readily assembled or dissembled, and in this manner to enable the device to be easily set up for use in producing the grain stack or the like, and then readily removed to another location for use in producing a second stack.
Still another object of the invention is to so construct the device that when dissembled the several sections may be so associated with respect to each other that they may constitute a comparatively small pack, and in this manner, provide for shipment or removal from one location to another.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification the invention is illustrated as comprising two embodiments, one of which namely, as illustrated in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive, constitutes the preferred form and in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive a modified form of the invention is illustrated.
The details of construction set forth in the accompanying drawings are selected for purposes of illustration, and while in themselves, embracing some of the minor features of the invention they are not to be taken as limiting the scope of the invention.
In said drawings;Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the preferred form of the device showing a grain stack as completed; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the preferred form of the device as assembled for use before the stack has been started; Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of one of the end upright members as employed in the preferred form of the device; Fig. 4 is an enlarged side elevation of a part of two sections as employed in the preferred form and showing the means for joining them end to end; Fig. 5 is an enlarged side elevation of that part of the preferred form of the device embodying the catches or trip locks;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of the device showing a grain stack as completed; Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the modified form of the device as assembled for use before the stack has been started; Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the device dissembled, the several sections being nested together; Fig. 9 is a sectional view of a detail of that part of the modified form of the device which carries the catch; Fig. 10 is a sectional view in detail of the modified form of the device showing the modified means of joining the section together.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the invention will be first described with reference to the preferred form as illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive. In this embodiment the device finds expression in a form for use in stacking grain comprising a framework composed of a plurality of sections, namely, a, 7), c and d, each of which being preferably constructed of stock material such for instance, an angle iron. The sections a, b, c and cl constitute a circular inclosure when assembled, and to properly shape the stack, each of the sections broadly comprises an outwardly flaring base panel and an inwardly inclined tapering panel above thebase paneh At the juncture point between these panels a suitable bilge or swell is formed. The stack when completed will be shaped as that of the form and with the bilge or swell of the stack, the water will be allowed to drip from the stack instead of soaking down through the base. In assembling the sections they are adapted to be joined end to end, by means of a female member of one section engaging a male member on an adjoining section. A suitable pin is employed to prevent the male and fe-' male members from becoming disengaged. In order that a person may enter the form in starting a stack, a suitable passway is provided between the confronting ends of two sections, and at this point, suitable catches or trip locks are employed to join the sections end to end. Provision is also made for rendering the form circumferentially adjustable. That portion of each section between the bilge and the base panel is covered with mesh wire. only to form a barrier or wall, but to also help to brace the sections.

6 represents other intermediate uprights Whichextend from the base rail to the bilge rail. These uprights 6 are preferably located on both sides of the intermediate upright 4 and the end uprights 3. Over that portion of each section between the bilge rail and the base rail is stretched large mesh -Wl16. As above stated, While this mesh wire is employed to construct the form more or less as an inclosure, however, it is to be noted that it also helps to brace the different sections.
7 represents diagonal braces which are secured to and extend from the bilge rail to the end uprights 3. The manner of connecting the different members of each section may be accomplished in any suitable manner, but as shown rivets are preferably employed. lVith each section constructed as above stated, they are adapted to be joined together to produce the form and in order that the joining means may be readily provid'ed, the bilge rail 5 and the base rail 2 of each section extends beyond the end up rights 3. On one of these extended ends a male attaching member 8 is provided by cutting away a suitable portion of the top flange of the angle bar to leave a tongue; on the other end a female attaching member 9 is provided by riveting, or otherwise at taching a plate 10 to the extended end. Both the male and female attaching members are provided with openings which are coaxial with each other. As the sections are joined together at the bilge rails 5 and the base rails 2, the base rail of each section is also provided with the male and female attaching means. As heretofore stated the male attaching members 8, on one section are adapted to engage the female attaching members 9 on the adjoining section, and in order that they may be securely fastened to- .Igether, suitable pins 11 are employed to engage the coaxial openings in the members and prevent them from becoming disengaged.
When the form is set up for use and the several sections have been joined together, a
suitable passageway is left between two of the confronting sections in order that a I person may enter the form to begin stacking. The sections are joined at this passagewayby a pair of readily detachable locks or catches 12 secured to the extended end of one of the bilge rails 5 and one of the base rails 2. These trip locks or catches are intended to engage a linked member 13,
which is in turn secured to'the end of the confronting bilgerail and base rail. These I catches 12 are preferably constructed with a pair of jaws, readily removable into and out of gripping relation with the linked memher and in order that the jaws on each catch may be operated together, a suitable rope 14 is connected to both catches.
15 represents a supplemental link which is secured to one of the flanges on the member 6. The catches 12 may engage these links if it is desired to decrease the circumferential dimension of the form. When this is done, it is of course, to be noted that the ends of the two sections will be overlapped. By constructing the sections of the form of angle iron and by the disposition of the several braces it will be readily seen that a form thus constructed my be produced very cheaply, yet capable of carrying out its intended use very effectively.
Referring to the modified form of the device, as illustrated in Figs. 6 to 10 inclusive, the device broadly embodies a similar construction to that illustrated in the preferred form, to the extent that it comprises a plurality of sections, namely, a 6 c and al each of which is constructed, as in the preferred form, of all stock material and has an outwardly flaring base panel and an inwardly tapering panel above the base panel. But the particular kind of material used in this form is pipe. The connections which join the several sections are different, in that they provide for the use of a union. It is also to be noted in this embodiment that wire covering is used of smaller mesh. Also in place of the trip looks or catches 12, illustrated in the preferred form, a hook is used in this modified form which is adapted to engage a link member such as illustrated at 13 in the preferred form. Each of the sections is constructed, as above stated, of all stock material, such as pipe, bent to the desired shape, in order to form a substantially circular inclosure when the form is assembled. Specifically, each sec tion comprises a top rail 1, suitably supported above the base rail 2 by the end uprights 3 The end uprights in this embodiment are in two parts, one of which, namely, 3 tapers inwardly above the bilge of the form and is connected to the top rail 1 by means of the Ls 1 the other end of which being screw threaded into a 4:way union 4- at the bilge line. The other part of the end upright is screw threaded into the 4-Way union and connected to the base panel 2 by means of the Ts 4 5 represents the bilge rail which is screw threaded into the 1-way unions 4 6 represents an intermediate brace member which, instead of being constructed of pipe is preferably fiat metal. The ends of this intermediate member 6 are bent over to provide hooks which engage the top rail 1 and base rail 2 That portion of each section between the base panel 2 and the bilge rail 5 is preferably covered with mesh Wire, such as 7 As stated in regard to the preferred form, wire is used not only for inclosing the lower part of the sections, but also to strengthen the structure. lit is to be noted that the 4-way unions f and the Ls 1 and the Ts 4 are all of stock material. With each section of the device thus constructed, they are adapted to be joined together to complete the form. lhe connections which join the sections together are shown on a large scale in Fig. 10, and comprise a short piece of pipe 7 screw threaded into one of the 4-way unions, which pipe is provided with a suitable shoulder 8 to retain the union 9 Screw threaded into the 4-way union of an adjoining section is a small piece of pipe 7 which is provided with screw threads on its outer end which engage the union 9 and in this manner join the sections. The connections above described are located both at the bilge rail 5 and the base rail 2 On the base rail 2 the small pieces of pipe 7 and 7 are screw threaded into the TS in substantially the same manner as they engage the 4-way unions l When the different sections are joined together a suitable passageway is left between the confronting ends of two sections as in the preferred embodiment. In order that the adjoining ends of the sections at this place may be also readily released, suitable eyes 10 are employed which have a screw threaded shank engaging the 4-way union P, which eyes are adapted to carry a suitable link chain. 11 the respective links of which are adapted to engage a suitable hook 12 which also has a screw threaded shank entering the 4-way union on the adjoining section. This particular joining means is provided at the bilge rail and the base rail. By means of the link chain 11 and the hooks 12 the confronting sections at this point may be adjusted for increasing or decreasing the circumferential dimensions of the form.
It is to be noted that the hooks 12 may be replaced and the catches or trip locks 12 described in the preferred embodiment of the invention used in their place. If desirable, the particular manner of joining the sections in the modified form of the device may be done away with, and the male and female members 8 and 9 shown in the preferred form used in their place. Upon reference to Fig. 8, it will be readily seen how the different sections when disassembled may be associated to form a comparatively small pack for shipping or removal from one place to another. While this feature is not shown in the preferred embodiment, it may be accomplished with the same valuable results.

A form for stacking grain comprising frame sections having means for uniting them end to end to constitute an inclosure; each section comprising an outwardly flaring base panel, and an inwardly inclined tapered panel above said base panel and forming therewith at their juncture, a bilge or swell, said sections embodying in their structure horizontal rails located respectively, to provide a bottom rail, a bilge rail and a top rail, and the connections between the sections being located at the meeting ends of the bottom rails and bilge rails; said sections also comprising end uprights and intermediate uprights extending upwardly from the bottom rails; some of the intermediate uprights terminating at the bilge rails, and others of said intermediate uprights together with said end uprights constituting through uprights and being connected with the bilge rails and extending past the same to the top rails; said sections also embodying in their structure diagonal braces extending from the bilge rails to some of said other uprights.
2. A form for stacking grain comprising frame sections having means for uniting them end to end to constitute an inclosure and means joining two of said sections adapted to leave between their confronting ends a space sufficient to provide a passageway for access to the inside of the inclosure said joining means comprising catches carried by one section, and link connectors carried by the other section.
3. A form for stacking grain comprising frame sections having means for uniting them end to end to constitute an inclosure; each section comprising an outwardly flaring base panel, and an inwardly inclined tapered panel above said base panel and forming therewith at their juncture, a bilge or'swell, said sections embodying in their structure horizontal rails located respectirely, to provide a bottom rail, a bilge rail and a top rail, and the connections between the sections being located at the meeting ends of the bottom rails and bilge rails and comprising a male member on one section engaging a female member on a confronting section, coaxial openings in said male and female members and pins engaging said openings.
