M. KEEGAN, Sr. & G. L. UOLLINS.
.HAMMOGK SUPPORTER.
Patented Jan. 1, 1895.
UNITED STATES PATENT MARTIN KEEGAN, SR, AND GEORGE L. COLLINS, OF TRENTON, NEl/V JERSEY, ASSIGNORS TO SAID KEEGAN.
HAMMOCK-SUPPORTER- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 531,727, dated January 1, 1895.
Application filed February 6 1893. Serial No. 461,210- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, MARTIN Knnenn, Sn, and Gnonen L. COLLINS, citizens of the United States, residing at Trenton, in the county of Mercer and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Structures for the Suspension of Hammocks, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to that class of hammock supports, wherein the parts of the structure are adapted to fold together compact-1y, for convenience of storage or transportation.
The invention consists, first, in a novel means of strengthening the joints of the folding beam; secondly, in the combination and arrangement of the beam, folding arms, side and back stays, and forefeet. Its object is to provide a self contained and convenient structure for the suspension of hammocks. 'We attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of the support. Fig. 2 is a section through the upper end of the post and casting.
The horizontal beam A, A, is the base, on which the Whole structure is reared. It consists preferably of two pieces, joined together at their central part, at or near the base line, by the hinge X, in such manner that the bases of the two parts can be folded back on each other,
a a a, a are four folding transverse arms hinged to base A, A, anchored in position for use by the hooks b, b, ZJ'J), and fold on either side of the base A, A, by hinges y, y, y, y.
B, B, B, B, are four standards, jointed in pairs by the bolts b If, to opposite sides of the base beam A, A, at or nearits extremities, and stay the forefeet C, O, in resisting the strains incurred by use of the attached ha1nmock.
C, C, are two forefeet jointed between standards B, B, B, B, at each upper extremity thereof, by the bolts orpins C 0'. Their feet coincide with notches 0 0' fitting snugly therein, and insuring stability when under strain. For convenience of storage or transportation they are dropped back between standards B, B, B, B, and the whole folded down on the upper surface of beam A, A.
G C are small castings fitting over the tops of the forefeet O, C, and properly secured thereto; fitted with hooks C O on their upper surfaces, and the jaws 0 0' one on each side thereof.
D, D, D, D, are side stays jointed in the jaws C O C 0 at their upper extremities, and at their lower ends fitted with two adjustable collars whereby they are secured in slots (1', contained in brackets (Z fitted to the outer extremities of the folding arms a, a, d, a. In folding they are released from the slots (1', d, cl, cl, dropped in by the side of the standards B, and fold with them on the beam A, A.
0' G are supports for the awning at each end of the structure and lit in sockets C C in castings G 0' X is a hinge, joining together the component parts of beam A, A, having its two projecting side plates overlapping the line of division of said parts, and thereby reinforcing them to successfully resist the side vibratory strains of the hammock.
In erecting our improved structure swing the two halves of beam A, A, upon hinge X, into the position shown in Fig. 1. The four arms a, a, a, a, are next swung outward upon their hinges y, 3;, y, 3 to at, or about, right angles, with beam A. A,and secured in staples b b b b by hooks b b b b. Next, raise the stays B, B, B, B, and drop the forefeet 0, G, into notches 0 G swing out the side guys D, and secure their lower ends in slots at, d, (1, cl, suspend the hammock by hooks O O", and it is ready for use.
'What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
In a folding hammock support, the beam A A, formed of two or more component parts, joined together by the hinge X, having projecting sides an" overlapping, and bracing the back stays B, all substantially as shown and joints of said beam; and also having the folddescribed. ing arms a, pivoted in pairs to opposite sides of the beam A, A, and secured thereto in 5 working position, by hooks b, and staples b I and having brackets d fitted to their outer \Vitnesses:
extremities, in combination with side stays WM. H. IVENS,
D, swivel ears G castings C forefeet O and JOHN KRUMHOLZ.
