To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXsANnnR SnBnsTYnN, a subject of the Emperor gary, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. v

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in toys and has for its principal object to provide a toy which will be particularly interesting to children and which will instruct them particularly as to the method in which iron is worked.

Another object of the invention is to provide a moving toy which may be easily operated by a sliding plunger and which can be easily and cheaply constructed of wood or any other suitable material.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings. in which,

Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a toy constructed in accordance with this invention showing a portion thereof in elevation, and, Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken on line2-2 of Fig. 1.

Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates a base of the device which is provided a longitudinal groove 2. This groove forms a guide for the sliding actuating rod 3 which is provided on its upper surface with a pair of screw eyes 4 the use of which will appear as the description proceeds. Supported centrally of the longitudinal extremities of the base 1 is the anvil base block 5 which is designed to support the member 6 which is shaped to represent an anvil. The element 7 is designed to represent the metal which rests upon the anvil and may be painted or colored in any suitable manner to represent a piece of hot metal upon which the hammers of the figures which will be more fully hereinafter described strike.

Secured to the base 1 near eachend are the figures designated generally by the numeral 8 which comprises the legs 9 which are secured in such a position that they straddle the groove 2. Pivotally secured as at 10 to the legs 9 is the body 1]. which is of Austria-Hun- 1 i suitable screw a if to which the flexible connection 13 is secured.

This flexible connection is also connected to the screw eyes 4: and it will thus be seen that a connection is formed between the body 11 and the actuating rod 3. The arms 14 of the body are so arranged that they support between their free ends the hammer handle 15 which carries the head 16, which headis designed to engage the element 7 when the device is actuated.

It will be apparent from the foregoing that in use the actuating rod 3 is slid longitudinally through the groove 2 and this action will cause the flexible connection 13 to exert pull on the eyelets thereby swinging the bodies 11 on their pivot pin and causing the figures to swing the hammers downwardly and into engagement with the element 7 thus representing iron workers striking the element 7 and thereby instructing and amusing those watching the operation of the device.

WVhile in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

What is claimed is I 1. A toy of the character described comprising a base having a groove therein, ar ticulated figures secured to the upper surface of the base straddling the groove, an anvil supported intermediate the ends of the base, hammers carried by the figures and means slidable in the grooves to cause the figures to move and thereby bring the hammers into contact with the anvil.

A toy of the character described com prising. a base having a longitudinal groove extending throughout its entire length, figures secured to the base and straddling the groove, said figures being jointed, an anvil supported on the base intermediate its ends, hammers carried by the figures and adapted to engage the anvil, a bar slidable in the groove and a flexible connection between each of the figures and the bar whereby when the bar is reciprocated, the figures will move and thereby represent metal workers using an anvil.
