JAMES B. CONDE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOTTLE-CLOSURE Application filed August 7, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, JAMES B. Conan, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Closures, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a closure for bottles, of novel, simple and efficient construction, having provision: firstly, whereby it may be readily applied to and removed from a bottle; secondly, whereby when applied to the bottle, the closing element may be readily moved into a closed or open position to close or open the bottle without detaching the closure from the bottle; thirdly, whereby the closing element may be stopped against further movement when it is moved either to the closed or open position; fourthly, whereby, the closing ele-- ment may be pressed down upon the top of the bottle by a spring member; and lifthly, whereby, various novel advantages are at tained.
The invention consists in the novel con struction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the upper portion of a bottle provided with a clo sure embodying my invention, showing the closure in the closed position. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan view, showing the closure in the open position. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the upper portion of the bottle and the closure thereon. Fig. 5 is a side view of the closure removed from the bottle.
Referring to the drawings, the bottle 2 there shown is an ordinary milk bottle of usual construction, having the usual outwardly-extending flange or rib 3 surrounding the neck thereof adjacent to the upper or open end of the bottle.
My improved closure is adapted to be applied to and removed from the bottle 2, and, in its preferred form, is of the following construction: Referring again to the drawings, 4 designates a spring clip or member which is adapted to embrace the neck of the bottle 2 beneath the flange 3 and to extend slightly more than half way around the bottle. The arms or side members of the clip Specification of Letters Patent.

, arm 6 has an elbow 7 formed therein which is positioned centrally, or substantially so, over the bottle 2, the arm 6 extending laterally from the elbow 7 toward one side of the bottle. Between the overhanging upper end of the arm 6 and the top of the bottle 2 is a round concavo convex or closing element 8 which is fitted to and rests upon the top of the bottle 2 and which closes the same, as shown. The cover 8 is pivoted eccentrically, at 9, to the upper end of the arm 6; and the cover 8 is movable on its pivot 9 from the closed position shown in Fig. 2 to the open position shown in Fig. 3 and back again. The part 10 of the arm 6 forms a stop, limiting the movement of the cover 8 when it is moved to the open position; and the cover 8 is provided with an upwardly-extending stop or projection 11 which is adapted to engage the arm 6 and limit the movement of the cover 8 when it is returned to the closed position.
Normally, or when the closure is detached from the bottle, as shown in Fig. 5, the distance between the clip 4 and cover 8 is less than when the closure is applied to the bottle, as shown in Fig. 4:, so that when the closure is applied to the bottle, the cover 8 and clip 4 will be moved apart and the spring arm 6, due to its bowed form, will press the spring clip a up against the bottom of the flange 8, and will press the cover 8 down upon the top of the bottle 2, and thus firmly hold the cover in place upon the bottle. The elbow 7 of the arm 6 presses upon the central portion, or substantially upon the central portion, of the cover 8, and thus causes the arm 6 to exert a substantially uniform pressure of the circular edge portion of the cover 8 upon the top of the bottle 2.
WV hen the cover 8 is moved to the open position the curved side of the top of the bottle 2 under the cover 8 enters the concave under face of the cover 8 and assists the engage said spring (3 in maintaining the cover 8 in the open position to permit the contents of the bcttle to be poured therefrom.
I claim:
1. A bottle closure comprising a spring clip adapted to embrace the neck of a bottle, a spring arm projecting frrm said clip, and a cover pivoted eccentrically to said arm and adapted to engage the top of a bottle.
2. A bottle closure comprising a spring clip adaptedto embrace the neck of a bottle, a spring arm projecting from said clip, a cover pivoted eccentrically to said arm and adapted to engage the top of a bottle, and a stop carried by said cover and adapted to engage said arm and limit the movement of the co er on its pivot.
3. A bottle closure comprising a member adapted to be connected to the neck of a bottle, a spring arm projecting from said mem er, and a cover pivoted eccentrically to said arm and adapted to engage the top of a bottle.
4. A bottle closure comprising a member adapted to be connected to the neck of a bottle, a spring arm projecting from said member, a cover pivoted eccentrically to said arm and adapted to engage the top of a bottle, and a stop carried by said cover and adapted to engage said arm and limit the movement of the cover on its pivot.
5. A bottle closure comprising a member adapted to be'connected to the neck of a bottle, a spring arm projecting from said member, and a cover pivoted eccentricallv to said arm beneath the same and adapted to engage the top of a bottle, said arm forming a stop limiting the movement of the cover on its pivot in one direction.
6. A bottle closure comprising a member adapted to be connected to the neck of a bottle, a spring arm projecting from said member, a cover pivoted eccentrically to said arm beneath thesame and adapted to engage the top of a bottle, said arm forming a stop limiting the movement of the cover on its pivot in one direction, and a stop carried by said cover and adapted to arm and limitthe movement of Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each,
the cover on its pivot in the reverse direction.
7. A bottle closure comprising a member adapted to be connected to the neck of a bottle, a spring arm projecting from said member, and a cover pivoted eccentrieally to said arm and adapted to engage the top of a bottle, said arm having a part adapted to bear upon the central portion of the cover when it is in position closing a bottle.
8. A bottle closure comprising a member adapted to be connected to the neck of a bottle, a spring arm projecting from said member, and a cover pivoted eccentrically to said arm beneath the same and adapted to engage the top of a bottle. said arm forming a stop limiting the mo ement of the cover on its pivot in one direction, said arm having a part adapted to bear upon the central portion of the cover when it is in position closing a bottle.
9. A bottle closure comprising a mem er adapted to be connected to the neck of a bottle, a spring arm proiecting from said mem er, a cover pivoted ecccntricallv to said arm beneath the same and adapted to engage the top of a bottle. said arm 'l orming a stop limiting the movement of the cover on its pivot in one direction, and a stop carried by said cover and adapted to engage said arm and limit the movement of the cover on its pivot in the reverse direction, said arm having a part adapted to bear upon the central portion of the cover when it is in position closing a bottle.
10. The combination with a bottle. of a closure comprising a member connected to the neck of the bottle, a spring arm projecting from said member, a cover pivoted cccentricallv to said arm between it and the bottle and seated on the bottle. said arm pressing said cover down upon the bottle.
In testimony whereof I ailiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
