Description
PATENTEU JUN 27 1871 Wiliam:
PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES WENSLEY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRESSER-FEET FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,380, dated June 27, 1871.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES WENsLEY, of Philadelphia,in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Presser-Foot Attachment to Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
Figure l is a side view, partly in section, of a presser-foot provided with my improved attachment. Fig.2 is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the same. Fig. 4 is a top View of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspon ding parts.
The object of my invention is to provide the presser-foot of a sewing-machine with a stitchguide, whereby, especially in leather, sewing or stitching can be done exactly parallel with seams. The invent-ion consists in the improvement upon a presser-f0ot for leatherstitching, as hereinafter fully described and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
A in the drawing represents a sewing-machine presser-foot of suitable kind and size. From its under side projects a feather or rib, a., which is sufficiently thin to enter a seam and thereby guide the fabric to let the stitching be parallel to the seam. The feather is secured to a spring, b, which is fastened to the shank of the presserfoot by a screw or rivet, c, the feather projecting through an orifice in the presser-foot. The upper end of the spring is enlarged, as at el, and receives a set-screw, c, whereby the spring can be set to regulate the depth of the feather. f is a point or pin projecting from the end of the presserfoot to serve as an eye-guide for the operator, .it being in line with the feather and above the seam. Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The arrangement, upon a presser-foot, A, of the spring-pressed feather a, passing therethrough, and the eye-guide f project-in g in front of and in line with said feather, as and for the purpose specified.
The above specification of iny invention signed by me this 19th day of April, 1871.
JAS. WENSLEY. Witnesses:
GEO. W. MABEE, ALEX. F. ROBERTS.
