Description
UNrrEn STATES ALBERT W. WEBSTER, OF ANSONIA, CONNECTICUT.
l IMPROVEMENT IN BUTTON-HOLE GUIDE-PLATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 116,378, dated June 27, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, ALBERT W. WEBSTER, of Ansonia, in the county of N ew Haven, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Button-Hole Guide-plates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this speciiication, in Which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved plate. Fig. Z is a detail sectional view of the same taken through the line :l: r, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side edge view ofthe same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. y
My invention has i'or its object to furnish im- 'proved button-hole plates, for use in working button-holes, which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use, and which will enable an inexperienced workman to work a better button-hole than an experienced workman without them; and it consists in the plates con structed as hereinafter more fully described.
A is a thin plate, made of metal or other snitable material, and to which are attached two or more pins, a. Bis a plate made oi' metal or other suitable material, and of the same shape and size as the plate A, but thicker. The plate B is made thicker than the plate A, so that the pins a can be made sufficiently longto hold thick material, and yet, whenever applied to thin material, Will not project so as to prick the ngers. One or both the side edges of the plates A B are grooved or notched to serve as guides to the needle when Working the button-holes. When both the side edges of the plates A B arel grooved one edge should be more coarsely grooved than the other, so that the same plates may be used for working finer and coarser button-holes.
In using the plates the plate A should be attached to the right side of the material at a proper distance from the button-hole, by forcing' the pins c through said material. The piece B is then put on and the two plates are pressed together. The plates A B are held, With the piece A, toward the thumb, and the working is begun at the back end of the button-hole, care being taken to hold the needle square with the plates, and to insert it in the right notch. Ii' desired, a single plate may be used, notched or grooved upon one or both its side edges, and held against the material in line with' the button-hole, to serve as a guide to the needle in working said button-hole.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The plates A B, connected by pins a and and grooved or notched upon one or both their side edges, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. A plate, notched or grooved upon one or both of its side edges to adaptitfor use as a guide in working button-holes, substantially as herein described.
