Be it known that I, EDWIN J. ARMSTRONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Portable Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to portable engines and consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
More particularly the invention is de signed for use with steam shovels and the invention is exemplified in connection with a steam shovel.
In the drawing illustrating the invention, 1 marks the frame, 2 the wheels, 3 the turn table, 4. the boom, the hoisting engine and (i the boiler. These are constructed in the ordinary manner.
The smoke box 7 is arranged on the top of the boiler. The flues 8 open through the head 9 of the boiler into the smoke box. The smoke box is provided with the head 10 from which the stack 11 extends.
In the construction ordinarily used, the head 10 is secured to the smoke box and the stack 11 is hinged on the head so that it may be dropped down when the engine or shovel is being moved from one place to another. The ordmary mechanism of the steam shovel is somewhat lower than this, as for instance the point A on the boom braces. Furthermore, the small opening made by the stack does not expose the flues for cleaning. I obviate these difficulties by hinging the head 10 on the smoke box 7 A hinge bracket 12 is arranged at one side of the smoke box. The hinge leaf 13 is fastened to the head 10 and the hinge pintle 14L completes the hinge.
The hinge is secured in closed position by the bolts 15. A hook 16 is provided to which a chain may be attached for holding the head in an open position as shown in the upper dotted lines. With the head in this position, the flues may be cleaned. When it is desired to move the engine or shovel, the head may be thrown entirely over bringing the stack alongside the smoke box and the boiler, thus reducing the height of the parts to the extent of the head and stack. In this way the length of the boiler may be increased and the capacity of the smoke box slightly increased without giving Specification of Letters Patent.

The roof 17 of the shovel is brought under the overhanging portion of the cover 10. It is not feasible to make a very tight joint between the roof and the smoke box and this overhanging portion makes a closure against leakage. Carrying the smoke box up a distance to make this overhanging connection is made possible by reason of the fact that the added height incident to this construction of the cover does not form a permanent obstruction along the top of the roof so as to interfere with the free movement of the shovel where the clearance is close.
