W. H. CLEGG. MACHINE FOR DISPLAYING CARDSAND THE LIKE. APPLICATION FILED MAR 22. may
WEEEEEE Patented Nov. 23, 1915.
WILLIAM HENRY GLEGG,
or BURNL'EY, ENGLAND.
MACHINE FOR ITISPLAYING- CARDS AND LIKE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY CLEGG, subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Burnley, in the county of Lancaster, in the Kingdom of England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Displaying Cards and the like, of which the followlng is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for use for the purpose of displaying photo, pictorial and advertising cards and the like, of the kind in which the cards are carried in a traveling frame or holder which brings each card in succession over a pair of lifting members which are raised to carry the card out of the traveling frame into a position in whichit can be seen, after which it is again lowered and replaced in the frame, which then moves forward and brings the next card into position for being lifted and displayed. This operation can be repeated so as to bring the whole set of cards in the carrier successively into view.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved and simplified construction of machine of the type indicated, which construction shall be cheap to manufacture and not liable to get out of order.
The improved construction deals particularly with the carrier frame for supporting the cards and the mechanism for operating the reciprocatory lifting device.
The invention will be further described with reference to the accompanying drawings which illustrate by way of example, embodiments of the invention.
In these drawings :-Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the machine, the side cover plate being removed for the purpose of showing the operating mechanism. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a case for the machine; and Fig. 3 is a corresponding front elevation.
The casing 6 has an aperture in its upper part through which the cards may be projected so as to come to lie against the supporting plate f, while being displayed. The cards are lifted to and from the displaying position by means of a pair of members 9 which are adapted to be projected through slots in a drum which is stationary within the casing e and is adapted to support a pair of interconnected rings carrying spokes a. The hub on which the spokes a; are mounted has on one end a ratchet wheel a.
The lifting members 9 are located outside side plates 4) forming part of the frame of Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented Nov. 23, 1915.
Application filed March 22, 1913. Serial No. 756,232.
the machine and are provided with notched lateral extensions at their outer ends, which extensions are adapted to pass through slots to in the plates 0) and engage the cards carried by the rotating frame.
The members 9 are pivotally connected at their lower ends to levers 00, which are mounted on and connected by a shaft 3 extending across the rear of the machine, One of these levers m is, as shown in Fig. 1, actu ated by the driving mechanism so as to swing'up and down and impart motion to the other lever 00 so that the lifting members 9' are moved up and down.
The driving arrangement is preferably such as to impart an irregular motion to the levers 09 causing a slowing down of the movement of the card as it approaches the displayed position, followed by a short dwell in this position. In the arrangement illustrated,-mo-vement of this kind is brought about by forming the lever 00 with a curved slot in which works a pin 2 carried by a wheel to which motion is imparted from an electric motor or other operating device. In the arrangement illustrated a worm drive is employed, the pin z being mounted on the worm wheel. The shaft 1 also carries an arm to which is pivotally connected a pawl Z which cooperates with the ratchet wheel a to produce the intermittent feedingforward of the rotary carrier. The point of this pawl is supported by a small bracket shown in Fig. 1 when it is out of engagement with i the tooth of the wheel.
In the form of case illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 the plate 7 forms the back of a structure having a front and sides made of transparent material, this structure being arranged over the slot in the casing 6.
On the lower part of the casing e in this arrangement there is provided a frame f. This frame is so formed as to be capable of holding a card or other fiat article to be displayed. A notice having reference to the pictures or other matter to be displayed may be inserted in the frame 7, or one of the cards such as are contained in the apparatus may be fixed in this frame. For instance, where the machine is used for advertising it may be arranged that each advertisers card is placed in the frame f for a certain portion of the time that his advertisement is being shown by the machine.
I declare that what I claim is 1. A machine for displaying cards and the like comprising a rotary carrier adapted to support the cards and to guide them in radial movement, a lifting member adapted to engage a card in the carrier, apivotally mounted lever pivotally connected with said lifting member, a curved slot in said lever, a pin working in said slot, a rotary member carrying said pin in a circular path, part of Which approximately coincides with the shape of the slot, and means for continuously driving said rotary member.
2. A machine for displaying cards and the like-comprising a rotary carrier adapted to hold cards and to guide them radially, a ratchet connected with said rotary carrier, a pawl coeperating with said ratchet, a lifting member adapted to'engage a card in theca'rrier, a pivotally mounted lever pivotally connected with said lifting member, an arm connected with said lever and with said pawl so as to transmit motion from the lever to the pawl, a rotary member, a pin carried by said rotary member and engaging said lever so as to rock it'about its pivotal support as the member rotates, a curved slot in said lever in which the pin works, the shapeof said slot corresponding approximately with l the shape of part of the path of said pin so that there is a dwell in the reciprocatory movement of the lever while the pin is moving through the said part of its path, and
. means for continuously driving the rotary member.
3. A machine for displaying cards and the like comprising a rotary carrier" adapted to support cards in radial positions therein, a
guide member having a slot located on each side of said carrier, a pair of lifting members arranged outside said guide members and having lateral projections eXtendmg through said slots and adapted to engage the edges of a card in the carrier, a lever connected with each of said lifting members one of said levers having a curved slot therein, a rock-shaft connected with both of said levers, and means for rocking said shaft to produce reciprocation of the ends of the lifting member-sin the guide slots, said means comprising a rotary member, a pin carried by said rotary member and engaging in the curved slot in said lever, the shape of said slot corresponding approximately with the shape of a part of the path of said pin, so that there is a dwell in the rocking motion imparted to the rock-shaft.
4-. A machine for displaying cards and the like comprising a rotary carrier adapted to hold cards in radial positions therein, a casing surrounding said carrier and comprising a front portion rearwardly curved at its upper part, a top portion adjoining said curved portion and having a transverse slot in it adjacent the point of junction, side portions having'slots therein meeting the transverse slot and the top portion; a pair of lifting members arranged outside said casing, each member having a lateral proj ection extending through the radial slot in the adjacent side member and being adapted to engage a card in the carrier by said extension, and means for reciprocating said lifting members.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name this 12th day of March 1913 in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM HENRY CLEGG.
