To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Wnmm: E. MAR- SHALL, a citizen. of the United States, residing at 7 Columbia Place, Maspeth, L. 11., in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and usenot met by the apparatus of the Patent No. 1,128,801, nor elsewhere in the art. ThlS apparatus is so constructed that without any tool the type can be changed quickly by hand.
In the drawings there is shown a preferred form of apparatus embodying the invention, although it will be understood that it may be embodied in other forms within the skill. of persons versed in the art to which it relates, without departing from the principles upon which its operation is based.
In the drawings, Figure 1 1s a vertical central section through the apparatus certain parts being shown in dotted outline; Fig.2 is an enlarged sectional detail of the printing mechanism; Fig. 3 1s a perspective of the separable sub-frame; Flg. 4 1s a perspective of the ink roller and frame; Fig. 5 is a perspective of the detachable wheel; Fig. 6 is a perspective of the shafton which the type carrier is mounted; Fig. 7 1s a perspective of the type carrier.

A motor 15 of any usual and convenient form is shown mounted on abase 16 within the frame 13. The motor is provided with a pulley. 17, connected by a belt 18 to a second pulley 19 mounted on shaft 20, which it drives. A pulley 2] is also mounted on the end of the shaft 20 and a belt 22 passes I around this and also around another pulley 23, carried by shaft 24, on which shaft there is secured a platen 25. These power transmitting connections are shown only in dotted outline as they are of usual construction.
It will be understood that any other suitable form of mechanism may be used to rotate the platen 25.
On a bracket 26 which is part of the frame 13 is secured by any suitable means as screws 27, a separable sub-frame 28. This sub-frame 28 serves as a support for the ink roller and its carrier and lock, also as a support for the type carrier. It also carries other devices used in pombination with these parts as hereinafter described.
At the rear, the frame is provided with journals 30, 30, adapted to receive bearings 31, 31 which are secured to or made integral with an oscillatory frame. 32 adapted to carry in a usual manner an inking roller 33 detachably secured inthe frame 32 by any/ suitable means-as screws 34. The movement of the frame 32 is limited by shoulders indicated at 35 (see Fig. 1) abutting against the front side of the journals 30. The frame 32 isheld downwardly by a guard 36 provided with a. terminal finger piece 37 and which guard is hingedly secured to the frame 28 by a pintel 38 around which is coiled one or more sprin 39. The movement of the guard is limlted .by a' shoulder '40-contacting with a portion of the frame 28. The guard is provided with lugs 41, 41,
v vided with a transverse pin 46 which is adapted to engage a radial-slot 47 inone member 48 of a detent, the other member 49 of which is provided with a downwardly extending arm having a terminal hook and which detent is mounted to rotate on a cross rod 51 around which is co led a spring 52 rigidly secured at one end to a swinging type carrier frame 53 and provided with an upwardly extending loop 5% adapted to impinge against a cross rod 55. The frame 58 is provided with a slot 56. A coiled. spring 57 is connected to the arm 45 and the detent member 49.
The type-carrier comprises a central shaft 60 having near one end an indentation 61 and at the other rigidly secured to the shaft a disk 62 provided on one side with a spac ing hub (not shown). A second disk 63 having a similar spacing hub 6 f is adapted to be yieldingly and detachably secured to the shaft by a radial spring pin 65 the inner end of which is adapted to engage the indentation 61, tubular'shaft 66 mounted on the shaft has rigidly secured to it at either end two wheels 67, 67 each having an interruption or truncated portion 68, 68 and alongside of one wheel 67 is a reduced portion 69 having a notch 70 adapted to be engaged by the hook 50. wheels 67, 67 is arranged a cylindrical sector 71 preferably of rubber and displaying suitable type indicated at 72 on its curved surface 73,
The ends of the shaft 60 which project beyond the disks 62 and 63 engage the slots 56 in the frame 53 and by means of the coiled spring 52, the type carrier is continually pressed down against the revolving platen 25 which is provided with two annugrooves one of which is indicated at 250 '1 see Fig. 2} and in which grooves the lower ends of the fingers a l are normally adapted to rest.
The operation of the device is as follows: A number of the checks to be indorsed are assembled upon the, shelf 12 convenient to the hand of the operator. The motor 15 is then caused to operate by the means provided in any particular case and the platen 25 is thereby. continually rotated, and through contact of the disks 62 with the surface of the platen the inner shaft 60 is also continually rotated.

coming between the disks 62 and the platen 25 is drawn downwardly until it contacts with the fingers a l which rest lightly in the annular grooves 250 of the platen and lifting these fingers they tilt the arm a5 and its pin 46 engaging the slot ofthe detent member 48, this in turn moves the member 49 and conse uently moves the hook 50 out of the notch i0 and in contact with the outer surface of the hub 89 and permits the tubular shaft 66.; (which has previously been detained from; moving by the engagement of the hoolr and notch} to move. llhisrotatesthe wheels 67 and the type sector 71 and the type on the latter is brought into contact with the surface of the check and prints the proper legend thereon. The passage of the check between the platen and the printing sector permits the fingers to drop back in their respective grooves, and the actions of the spring 57 keeping the hook pressed against the surface of the hub 69, the hook snaps into the notch 7 0 as soon as the revolution of the parts will permit and the rotation of the type sector is stopped and the interruption 68 is again brought into position so the wheels 67 are no longer in contact with the platen.
The ink roller frame 32 presses down upon the type carrier frame 53 and assists in the printing operation. As the sector in its revolution passes the ink roller it receives the proper amount of ink.
I. claim:
1. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a rotatable platen, of a swinging frame movable toward and from the same, a shaft ournaled in the frame and removable therefrom, a type carrier frictionally mounted on the shaft to rotate therewith and removable therefrom when the shaft is detached from the frame, rollers carried by the shaft at the ends of the type carrier and engaging the platen to efiect the as rotation of the shaft, one of said rollers being removable to permit the removal of the type carrier, and interlocking means between said rollers and shaft to hold the two against accidental detachment and prevent their relative rotation,
2. ln device of the character described, a rotatable platen, an intermittently rotating type carrying device comprising a swinging frame, a type carrying device detachably secured therein and means for yieldingly holding such device in its swinging frame,
including an oscillating frame, an inking device carried thereby, a guard for this ink ng device and aspring adapted to hold the guard in respect to this inking device to hold the inking device frame against the type carrying device,

In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a support, of a platen mounted thereon, a frame movably mounted on the support, atype carrier in the frame cooperating with the platen, a second frame movable toward and from the first frame, an inking device in the second frame cooperating with the type carrier, a shield movably mounted over the second frame and inking device, and a spring hearing against the support and shield for urging said shield against the second frame, the second frame against the first frame, and the type carrier of the. first frame into coaction with the platen.
6. In apparatus of the characterset forth, the combination with a support, of a platen mounted thereon, a frame pivotally mounted on the support, a rotatable type carrier in the frame cooperating with the platen, a
and a spring engaged with theshield and with the support for yieldingly holding the shield against the second frame and maintaining the. inking device in coaction with thetype carrier and the type carrier in coaction with the platen.
7. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with a supporting frame, of a rotatable platen journaled thereon, a swinging frame pivoted on the support, a type carrier, rotatably mounted in the frame and cooperating with the platen, an inking roller frame, a shield member having a com mon pivotal mounting on the supporting frame, an inking roller journaled in the last mentioned frame beneath the shield and cooperating with the type carrier, and a coiled spring on the mounting for the inking roller frame and shield, said spring being connected to the supporting frame and the shield. 7
