(NumndeL) To all whom it may concern: Be it known that 1, WILLIAM N. SELIG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illi nois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Exhibiting and Taking Pictures, of which the following is a specification. L
The invention relates to that class of ma- IO chines for exhibiting and taking pictures especially designedufor use in the display of whatare known or termed moving pictures,which machines have a variety of names or designations. It is well known that in order to obtain the best results machines of this class should have a positive and reliable movement asregards the timing of the parts, so as to bringthe picture properly in view to be projected, it being understood that the pictures are taken under the same conditions. i The objects of the present invention are to insure a positive and reliable feed of the pictures into the line of projection, to improve the construction and operation of the feeding mechanism and the film ribbon or strip on which the pictures are taken, to positively and effectually cut off and renew or supplythe light at the proper time in relation to the feed of the picturesand so as to have the cutoff occur simultaneously with the feed ofaj new picture into place and to have the re-I: newal of thelight occur as the picture is place to be projected or at the time the pic-j 5 ture is taken, to improve the construction and operation of the cut-off in its relation to the feed mechanism of the strip and pictures, and to improve generally the construction and operation of the machine as a whole.
-The invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The machine is to have a main frame or support A, mountedon aebase A, the frame and its base being made of metal or other suitable material. A second frame or supportB for the lens-tube and other appliances is attached to the main frame or support on the front side by a flap or butt-piece B, secured to the main frame or support by screws or otherwise, with a hinge connection I) between the second frame or support and the flap or butt, so that the frame or support can be dropped forward, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 6. The second frame or support is held upright against the main frame or support by a catch a, having a finger-piece or arm a and pivotally attached to the main frame by apin or pivot a", so that its acting end can be made to overlap the edge of the frame or support B and lock said frame or support in its operating position. The frame or support B has thereon guiderods C, the ends of which are entered in ears a, projected out from the side pieces of the frame, in which ears the ends of the guiderods are locked and held by set-screws c or in any other suitable manner. A plate D is mounted on the guide-rods so as to slide thereon, for which purpose the plate has ears cl, through which the guide-rods pass. This plate has an annular rim or wall D on its rear face, and its front face has an annular ring able or desired form. The lenssupportingi and carrying plate D is moved up and down i on the guide-rods in the construction shown by means of a lever E, pivotally attached by a pin or pivot e to an ear or lug d on the upper end of the supporting-plate and having,
at one end a slot 8 for the passage of a pin or pivot 6 which is entered into a block or slide 0 mounted and adjustable on one of the guide-rods and locked and held when adjustcd by a set-screw or otherwise. The pin or pivot e forms a fulcrum, so that by moving the free end of the lever up or down the carrying-plate will be raised or lowered, as may be required or necessary, to bring the lens-tube in proper relation for projecting and displaying or for taking a picture.
The picture ribbon or strip of film is wound onto an upper reel F of suitable construction andhaving a hub or spool mounted on a supporting-rod F, and, as shown, the outer disk or head of the reel has a stud or lug f, at-
tached to which is aspring f, the free end of which engages with groovesj' in the end of the supporting-rod, so as to hold the reel against an adjustable collar f movable on the rod and locked and held when adjusted bya setscrew f or by other suitable means. The
film ribbon or strip runs from the upper reel I to a lower reel G, mounted on a shaft or spindle C, and, as shown, the outer disk or head of this reel has a stud or lug g, attached to which is a spring 9, the free end of which engages with a groove g in the end of the shaft or spindle and holds the reel in place. The spindle G at its inner end has a square shoulder 9 which enters a square recess in the reel disk or head or the hub or spool of the reel and locks the reel on the spindle, so as to revolve therewith, and, shown, the reel is held against end play inward on its should-er by a collar or ring g on the shaft or spindle. The shaft or spindle G of thelower reel is mounted in suitable heads or bearings on the ends of the arms of a fork or stirrup G, attached to a post or upright G secured tothebase of the machine, and has attached thereto intermediate of its bearings a grooved pulley-wheel G over which a driving-belt G is driven from a grooved pulley-wheel G on the main driving-shaft. The pulley-wheel is connected with the shaft or spindle by a ratchet-wheel G fixed to the shaft or spindle by a set-screw or otherwise and having its teeth engaged by a pawl or ratchet g pivotally mounted on the side face of the pulley and held in engagement by a spring 9 attached atone end to the side face of the pulley, which connection causes the pulley to drive theshaft or spindle and allows the shaft or spindle to have a reverse rotation indeperfect control.

The arm or bar N'has avertical play and also an oscillating or swinging movement have the teeth, projections, or points n engage with a corresponding number of perfov on its pin or pivot, and these two movements combined give the acting end, having the cross-rod N an up-and-down travel and an in-and-out throw, by means of which the end plates 92 are projected into slots N in the Web or body of the frame or support A to rations in the ribbon or strip, and when so engaged the downward movement of the arm or bar carries with it the end plates M, which act to draw down the strip or ribbon. The downward movement of the strip or ribbon continues until the limit of downthrust of the rod or bar is reached, at which time the arm or bar is given an outward swing at its upper end,withdrawing the plates 11 with their teeth, projections, or points, from the slots and disengaging the ribbon or strip, which remains motionless with a picture central of the sight-opening d in the end plate of the lens-tube and central of an opening or window A in the main frame or support and an opening or window 13 in the second frame or support which carries the lenstube. The outward movement of the upper end of the arm or bar continues until the limit of the throw is reached, which limit is also the limit of the downward thrust of the arm or bar, and when this point is reached the arm or bar begins its upward thrust, which thrust continues until its limit is reached, at which point the upper end of the arm or bar is moved inward for the end plates n at the terminal point of the upward thrust and inward movement to be again entered into the slots N and have the teeth, perforations, or points engage with the perforations of the ribbons, and during such upward thrust and forward throw of the arm or bar the ribbon remains stationary or in a fixed position to display the picture which is in front of the sight-opening. These movements of the arm or bar will continue as long as the display of pictures is to be made by simply revolving the main shaft, and with each downthrust of the arm or bar the ribbon or strip is advanced so as to bring into view a new picture, at the 'same time withdrawing the preceding picture,
and the distance the ribbon or strip is moved in each instance is always the same, because the thrust and throw of the arm or bar is the same distance in each case by reason of the rotation of the crank, which gives the required raking or drawing movement to the arm or bar. It is necessary that during the periods of transition, in which a new picture takes the rear face of the main frame or support and having attached thereto by screws 0 or otherwise a semicylindrical disk or plate 0, the lines of which are cut so asto present a defined sharp edge 0 on each side, which edges act with the rotation of the disk or plate to out oh? the light as the advance edge reaches and passes the window or opening for the picture and to admit the light as the rear edge reaches and passes the window or opening for the picture. The rotation of the disk to present the edges properly in relation to the window or opening to cut 06 and admit the light should be one that will produce the cut-off effect when the rake or claw is performing its work of presenting a new picture in front of the opening or window and that will bring the light-admitting edge of the disk or plate to pass the window when the rake or claw has completed its work and the picture is in front of the opening or window. The opening between the two defining edges is one to admit the light for the length of time required to project or throw the picture properly,which is the time that the picture remains stationary while the rake, 0r claw is making its backward, upward, and forward movement to engage with the ribbon or strip to advance the next picture. It will thus be seen that the rake or claw and the shade disk or plate cooperate together-that is, the shade disk or plate is in position to shut 0d the light while the rake or claw is operating to bring a new picture into view and the shade disk or plate is in position to admit the light while the rake or claw is returning to engage the ribbon or strip and advance a new picture.
The ribbon or strip, at the point of engagement of the rake or claw therewith, is held so as to insure the engagement by means of flat bow-shaped springs Pone on each sid e each spring engaging the border or edge of the ribbon or strip in line with the advance of the rake or claw through the slots, and these springs are secured to a cross-bar b of the frame or support B. The ribbon or strip passes from the upper reel downward between the frame or support B and the frame or support A, back of the pressure-springs P and back of the feed wheels or disks 1 and K, as shown in Fig. 6. The ribbon or strip is free to slack somewhat between the upper feed wheels or disks and the windows or openings of the frames or supports and is held against self-slipping past the windows or openings by the springs P. Below the springs and above the lower feed wheels or disks the ribbon or strip is free to slack somewhat, and to prevent the slack from falling too far and interfering with the operation of the lower feed wheels or disks a rest or support 19 is provided on the frame B, and below the lower feed wheels or disks the frame has an outwardly-projecting ledge 5 which assists in maintaining the engagement of the ribbon or strip with the wheel by giving it a slightly forward and downward inclination.
The ribbon-or strip after it leaves the lower IIO feeddisk or'wheel passes under a roller H mounted on a spindleH carried by onearm out from the main frame or support by a pin or pivot 714. The other arm H of the lever carries a roller h", mounted on a'spindle J2 and this roller engagesiwith the driving-belt G and acts tosome extent as a tightener.
The bell-crank or L lever is held in normal position by a coil-spring h one end of which is attached to the lever and the other to the, base of the machine, which spring permits the lever to rise in case of too much tension on the ribbon or strip. The ribbon or strip is ke pt from injury in being advanced by a backing or lining of textile fabric 71 on the face of the main frame or support in the pathway of travel for the ribbon orstrip. If desired, the window or opening A can be provided with a setting Q, of glass or other transparent material, held in the opening by the upper feed wh'eelsor disks. The ribbon or strip in such movementis free to flex or.
bend 'aloove the lens-tuba-b'ntis held taut andfstraightin its passage between the win dows or openings, so as to throw or project the picture ina proper manner; The ribbon 1 or strip below the lens-tube is heldagainst self-slipping by the pressure-springs, which also form a backing to insure the engagement of the ribbon by the rake or claw. The rake or claw by its action draws down or advances the ribbon positively a distance equal. to the space occupied by the picture, and such drawing down or advance is facilitated by the flex or bend below the upper feed-wheel. The
ribbon or strip is moved downward or advanced after its release by the rake or claw through theaction of the lower feed wheels or disks, and from the feed wheel the ribbon is unwound onto the lower reel by the revolvf ing of such reel. The feature ofallowing the disks to operate with'out strain or draw on the ribbon or strip to flex or bend above the lens;-
tube and below the rake or claw allows the' rake or claw to'operate without straining the ribbon andallows the lowe'rf eed wheels or ribbon or strip, bywhich arrangement injury to the ribbon or strip from the action of the feed wheels or disks and of the rake or' claw is effectually guarded against. The ribbon or strip is positively engaged by the upper and lower feeds and is held by the feeds against travel except by the action of the feeds, so that it is fed or advanced under and by a positiveengagement with its feed. The ribbon mittent feed, by which it is acted 'on and fed orstrip is given a positive and regular interforward or advanced under and by a positive engagement. This operation of. a positive feed, continuous and intermittentin character, gives the inost perfect and reliable results, as the ribbon or strip is under a regulated control and can only be advanced or moved as it is acted upon by the 'feed, the intermittent feed and the intermittent shade for cutting off and admitting light having a coacting relation by which as a picture is being advanced the light is cutoff and with the cessation of the advance the light isadmitted, thus preventing the running of one picture into another to create confusion and giving each picture a prominent projection and display. V These several features of construction and operation are found combined and operative in the machine of this invention and add to the utility of machines for exhibiting and taking pictures. I

The combination in a picture exhibiting and taking machine, of an upper feed and a lower feed for the picture ribbon or strip, both feeds positively engaging the picture ribbon or strip outside of the line of the picture on each side and each feed comprising a rotatable shaft, a sleeve mounted on the shaft and having the shaft endwise movable therein and feed-disks fixed on the sleeve to the picture ribbon or strip, both feeds carried by the hinged frame or support and both positively engaging the picture ribbon or strip and each feed comprising a rotatable shaft, a sleeve mounted on the shaft and having the shaft endwise movable therein and feed-disks fixed on the sleeve to engage the edges of the pictu re ribbon or strip, an interlock between each shaft and the sleeve mounted thereon, a sprocket-wheel on one end of each shaft, a
.sprocket chain running over the sprocketwheels, and a driving means for the lower rotatable shaft for operating both feeds simultaneously, substantially as described.
The combination in a picture exhibiting and taking machine, of a mainframe, a secondary frame or support mounted on the main frame and hinged thereto at its lower end, an upper feed and a lower feed for the picture ribbon or strip, both feeds carried by the secondary frame orsupport and both positively engaging the picture ribbon or strip and each feed comprising a rotatable shaft, a sleeve mounted on the shaft and having the shaft endwise movable therein and feed-disks fixed on the sleeve to engage the edges of the sprocket-wheel on one end of each shaft, a sprocket-chain running over the sprocket Wheels and a driving means for the lower rotatable shaft for operating both feeds simultaneously, substantially as described.

The combination in a picture exhibiting and taking machine, of a main frame, a secondary frame or support mounted on the main frame and hinged thereto at its lower end, an upper feed and a lower feed for the picture ribbon or strip, both feeds carried by the secondary frame or support and both positively engaging the picture ribbon or strip, each feed comprising a rotatable shaft, a sleeve mounted on the shaft and having the shaft endwise movable therein and feed-disks fixed on the sleeve to engage the edges ofthe picture ribbon or strip, an interlock between each shaft and the sleeve mounted thereon, a sprocket-wheel on one end of each shaft, a sprocket-chain running over the sprocket- Wheel, a driving means for the lower rotatable shaft operatingboth feeds simultaneously, an intermittent feed mounted on the main at each end thereof and a reciprocating and oscillating rigid arm or bar carrying the crossrod, and means for giving the arm or bar its reciprocating and oscillating movements, su b.-
