IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 116,124, dated June 20, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it knownthat 1, DAVID WEBBER, of Houlton, in the county of Aroostook and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Buckle; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawingformin g part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvement in harness-buckles; and it consists in a novel arrangement, with aframe in some respects similar to the ordinary buckle-frame, but without the tongue, of a clamp by which the strap may be held firmly without the aid of the tongue, the use of which requires that the strap be perforated, which weakens it very much. clamp is also desirable for holding the strap, because it can be adjusted any required amount, whereas when the tongue is employed the amount of adjustment is determined by the distance of the holes from each other.

Figure .1. is a plan view of my improved buckle with straps connected to it. Fig. 2 is a section through it longitudinally, and Fig. 3 isa plan of a modified arrangement.

A represents an oval or it may be a rectangular frame, with two cross-bars, B, and, it preferred, it may have a slot, 0, at each side for the attachment of straps perpendicular to the strap D E to be buckled. Near one of the crossbars B, and on the inside of the bar A, I make a notch, F, and insert the clamp, which consists of a rectangular frame having the two end bars G curved, as shown in Fig. 1,the side bar H extended beyond bars G, and shaped on the under side to bear flat, or nearly so, on the strap D, when inserted in the frame A, and the strap E is attached to the bar I. The bars G are of such distance from each other as to admitof the clamp being inserted in the notches F and vibrated freely therein, while the ends of H. extend far enough over the bars of frame A to keep the clamp from slipping through when the strap D is disconnected. The strap E is permanently connected to the clamp so that it cannot drop out of the notches F. The strap D is passed under the end a of the frame A, over bar D, under H, over the other bar B, and next to the clamp and'under the end b, and between it and the strap E. The clamp is pushed back through notches F so as to raise the bar H to admit of applying and disconnectin g the strap D.

In Fig. 3 I have represented a plan of arranging the clamp outside of the frame A, which is made narrower between the cross-bars B, and in this case 1 have connected the strap D by passing it under both bars B up between the end I) and the bar B, next to it and the clamp, back over bars B, and under H and a; but it may be connected as in Fig. 1.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The buckle-frame A O 0, having the crossbars B B flush with the sides, in connection with therectangular clamp having curved sides G G, working in grooves F F, and the piece H, elongated at each end to rest upon the frame, the whole being arranged and operating substantiallyas shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
