DRINKING ATTACHMENT FOR BROODERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1915.
Application filed December 2, 1914. Serial No. 875,159.
To all whom it mar concern: 7
Be it known that I, CLARENCE I/V. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rome, in the county of Kennebec, State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drinking Attachments for Brooders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip' tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in devices used in poultry culture and particularly for use in connection with brooders.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a novel and simple device for attachment to a brooder in which to place a drinking cup or tray for protecting the same from contamination.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which can be quickly and easily applied to a brooder into which the little chicks can pass to obtain a drink.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a brooder showing my attachment applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the attachment and portion of the brooder, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the attachment removed.
' Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents one wall of a brooder in which is formed an exit opening 11. Secured to the outer face of the wall above the opening are the outwardly extending headed pins or screws 12 which are adapted to support the attachment.
The attachment is a box-like structure 13, one end of which is open as at 14: and surrounding this opening are the inturned flanges 15 and 16, the flanges 15 overlapping the ends of the flanges 16 and being suitably secured thereto. The bottom of the box 13 is perforated as at 17 to permit dirt to fall therethrough and also to permit any water which is spilled from the tray 18 to pass therethrough. In the upper flange 15 are formed notches 19 which are engaged with the headed pins 12 whereby the box is suspended at the side of the brooder, the opening 14 registering with the opening 11, as clearly seen in the drawing. In the sides of the box are windows 20 so that the interior of the box will be properly lighted.
It will thus be seen that chicks from the brooder can readily pass into the box to obtain a drink and while in the box can not scratch up litter and throw the same into the tray. The water in the tray is thus prevented from being contaminated. The device can be quickly and easily removed and if desired, a sliding door 21 can be mounted on the brooder to close the open ing 11.
On the top of the box is hinged a lid 22 permitting access to the interior thereof.
Furthermore, it will be appreciated that the tray can readily be refilled, or removed and cleaned without opening the brooder and cooling the same or disturbing the chicks. While I have shown the attachment as rectangular in shape, it will be understood that the shape may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention or scope of the claim.
hat is claimed is:
The combination with a brooder having 7 an opening in one side, of headed pins secured to the brooder above the opening, a box having an opening in one end and disposed against the outer face of the wall of the brooder, the opening registering with the opening of the brooder, inturned flanges surrounding the opening of the box, one of the flanges having notches for the reception of the headed pins to support the box on the brooder wall and a perforated bottom forming a part of the box.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
CLARENCE IV. SMITH. IVitnesses FLOY H. SAWTELLE, G. M. BACHELLER.
