HENS NEST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2, 1915.
Application filed September 5, 1912. Serial No. 718,721.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT L. MoIN- TYRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlin ton, in the county of Coffey and State of Ixansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in I-Iens Nests, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hens nests.
One object of my invention is to provide a nest that will be sanitary and one which may be easily cleaned.
Another object of my invention is to pro vide a construction wherein the hen cannot roost.
Other objects of the invention will hereinafter appear.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings.
In said drawings :Figure 1 is an end view in elevation. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the nest, and, Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the nest.
Referring to the drawings, the nest is made from a flat sheet of bendable metal and comprises an inclined side 1, forming a. roof from which are bent downwardly the ends 2. At the base of the side 1 the body is bent downwardly to form a vertical wall 1 and inwardly from said wall to form a bottom 3, and at the rear end the bottom 3 is bent upwardly to form a wall at a from which are bent flanges 5 adapted to be secured to the ends 2, as by means of rivets 6. The ends 2 are preferably bent over to form flanges 7 extending beneath the bottom 3 to better support the same and also to provide flanges '7 adjacent the wall 1. Rivets or other fastening means 7 and 7 may be used to fasten the flanges 7 and 7 to the bottom and wall 1, respectively. In the wall 1 is provided an opening or doorway 8 adapted to be closed by a door 9 pivoted to the wall at 10, and preferably provided with a knob 11 to be engaged by the hand. Ventilating openings 2 may be provided adjacent the top of the walls 2, as shown.
Suitable openings such as 12 are provided in the wall 1. It will be noted that the doorway 8 is formed above the floor 3 and that there is an intermediate portion or wall of metal extending between the door and floor. This wall in connection with the opposite end, slanting side and vertical wall 4, provides a box portion to receive straw or other material suitable for a nest. Said walls also prevent eggs rolling from the nest. The metal of wall 1 is bent inwardly to provide a smooth step 13 for the hen.
Bymeans of the inclined wall 1 there will not be enough space between the floor 3 and said wall to permit a hen to roost in the nest, whereby the hen is forced to cover the eggs, which would ordinarily be done in preference to leaving or deserting the nest. The device is adapted to be suspended from any suitable support designated 14 in the drawings, which support is preferably provided with books 15 adapted to be engaged by the openings 12. -t will be seen that there is an opening at the rear of the nest between the upper extremity of the wall 4 and the side 1. By means of this opening the device may be suspended from a hen house comprising two rooms. The nest is secured so that the partition between the two rooms will be central of the openings. In this way the hen can enter the nest from either of two rooms and leave the same through the doorway 8, openings of course, being provided in each room to the nest.
The nest is of such construction as to permit a row of them to be secured in a line to a. hen house opposite an opening near a perch, so that access to all of the nests may be had from the same perch through the same opening.
If desired. a door such as 9 mav be provided on each end of the nest, and further if desired. a partition may be provided midway of the nest so as to divide the same into two nests or compartments.
It is clear that changes within the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a nest. a body portion made of a single sheet of bendable metal comprising a wall having an inclined portion, openings provided in said wall, and walls bent from said inclined wall provided with ventilating openings. a bottom bent from said first wall terminating in a rear wall, said rear wall provided with flanges. fastening means extending through said flanges and end walls, flanges on said end walls extending under the bottom, n pening provid d in loneoff "Y dfid witliwarnoape gr,deorierisfid p said walls, and a door to close said opening. ring, the inclined Wall being provided with 2. In a nest, a one piece body portion com openings for engagement with a support.
