ALPHEUS H. KLING, OF PERRYSBURG, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEN-HOUSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,278, dated November 20, 1877 application filed September 1, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALPHEUS H. KLING, of Perrysburg, in the county of Miami and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful improved hen-house which shall be simple in construction, convenient in use, will enable setting hens to be kept entirely separate from the others, and will prevent them from being disturbed by persons getting eggs and feeding the hens.
The invention consists in a hen-house, divided into two compartments by a partition in line with the middle part of the platform upon which the nest-boxes stand, and having the lower board of said partition above said platform hinged at its upper edge to form a swinging door, and enable the nest-boxes to be slid across said platform from one side to the other of said partition, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the hen-house, which is provided with doors, windows, ventilating-apertures, &c., in the usual way. In one side of the interior of the house A are placed poles or bars B, to form roosts for the hens. The ends of the poles or bars B rest upon cleats or other supports attached to the walls or frame of the building. Across the house A, a little at one side of the center, is formed a platform, 0, to receive the nest-boxes D. The house A, about in line with the center of the platform 0, is
divided into two compartments by a partition, E. The lower board 6 of the partition E, above the platform 0, is loose, and is hinged at its upper edge to the lower edge of the board above it, forming a swinging door.
The nest-boxes D are placed upon the platform 0, upon the side of the partition E next the roosts B, and when a hen wishes to set the door 6 is raised,'and her nest is pushed across the platform 0 to the other side of the partition E.
By this construction the setting hens will be kept separate, so that they will not be disturbed by the others, or by persons entering the other compartment for eggs and to attend to the hens; and they can be supplied with food and water, so that they will not be liable to leave their nests so long that the eggs will be spoiled.
It will be observed that the swing door or doors extend only to, but not below, the top of the boxes, so that it may be swung up without disturbing any box but the one in which is the setting hen.
When the hen. is on her nest, her head, neck, and a portion of the body is above the bottom of door 0, which must be swung up and held until the box with hen has been transferred.
What I claim is A hen-house having movable nest-boxes D on a platform, 0, the latter divided by hinged door or doors 0, as and for the purpose specified.
