VEHICLE-CURTAIN.
To all whom it may concern;
v Be it known that I, Funnels E. LIGER, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Laingsburg, in the county of Shiawassee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vehicle-Curtains, of which the following specification is a full disclosure.
My invention relates to side curtain supporters for buggies or other vehicle tops o-r coverings and has for an object a means non-expansible for reinforcing a margin of the curtain, primarily that from which it is suspended, to avoid sagging or flaring when in'use, whereby the material is relieved of wearing strains, and of assistance in withdrawing the curtain from its support. It is also foldable with the curtain.
A further object of the invention is to secure a metallic binding, comprising rectangular links hingedly united to form a chain structure, within a margin lap fold of the curtain, providing a reinforced hem, with fastening eyelets through the hem and within respective links. I
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be more readily apparent from the annexed drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment and from the following description thereof, and in such drawings, like characters of reference denote corre-v sponding parts throughout the several views of which show the chain or link binding. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail plan view' of two links hingedly united of which the chain binding is comprised.
The supporter consists of a plurality of links l'successively connected by a strap 2 bent tubularly around opposite cross-bars of the links adj acently disposed to hingedly successively connect a plurality of links into a chain length. The links preferably are rectangularly bent strands of wire to provide a comparatively thin and wide chain binding so that when it is secured within the hem or to the margin of the curtain it will not have a bulky appearance, or be excessive in weight.
The design, it is obvious, may be vari ously modified within the contemplation of the invention, which from a generic aspect Specification ofLetters Patent.
.may be defined as a metallic successively connected and foldable link binding, and certain llnks thereof eachpreferably of a Patented Nov. 2,1915- Applicationfilednugust14,1914.. Serial No. 856,743. 1
contour to surround or interveningly re-" ceive a curtain fastening eyelet secured to the material at the binding margin or the links themselves may serve as fastening 'eyelets.
The curtain 3 herein illustrated represents the side curtain of a buggy of the customary outline with the binding within a hem margins representing the upper edge of the curtain when in use. The hem margin 4 consists of the ordinary lap fold with the link binding 5 longitudinally secured with ing the curtain in the well-known manner to buttons projected from the buggy top frame. Such location of fastening eyelets w1ll preclude any pulling or tearing of the eyelets out of the curtain, and the link binding offers a freer release of the eyelets from the buttons in withdrawing the curtain under the general abusive practice of pulling from one end of the curtain outward. The
the position shown the binding offers and.
serves a two-fold purpose. WVith the link or chain binding embedded within the hem margin of the curtain it is concealed and does not detract in any degree from the ornamental or finished appearance of the curtain. It being non-flexible or non-expansible rigidly supports the curtain in position against sagging or flaring and presents no detriment in compactly folding the curtain when not in use. The binding reinforces the margin to prevent violent vibration of the curtain andthus eliminates the noise incident thereto. As a curtain supporter, the binding is only supplied to the upper margin but its use may be extended to the side or base margin and its adaptation for marginally binding or webbing a covering for'various other and analogous uses is evident. 7
Having described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States l. The combination of a vehicle curtain having a hem margin from which the cur tain is suspended, a binding inclosed Within said margin comprising a plurality of hingedly connected links, and fastening eyelets secured through the curtain margin and each interveningly bounded by a respective link.
7 2. In an article of the class described, a pliable cover member, a binding therefor comprising a plurality of non-pliable ring elements hingedly connected, secured to a Vmargin of said cover and foldable therewith.
8. In an article of the class described, a pliable cover member, a margin binding therefor, comprising -a plurality of nonpliable ring elements hingedly connected and secured to a margin of said cover mem-' ber and foldable therewith, and fastening elements secured to said cover member each Within a respective ring element.
In Witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name, as attested by the two subscribing Witnesses.
