LEOPOLD N. SPERLING AND CHARLES J. HARRIS, 0F YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO; SAID HARRIS ASSIGNOR T0 SAID SPERLING'.
COLLAPSIBLE SCREEN FOB BABY-CARRIAGES.'
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1920.
Application filed November 3, 1919.. Serial No. 335,481.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, LEOPOLD N. SPER- LING and CHARLES J. HARRIS, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collapsible Screens for Baby-Carriages, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a collapsible screen for baby carriages, of which the following is a clear, full and exact description.
The principal obiect of our invention is to provide a screen adapted to be fitted to ordinary baby carriages.
Another object of our invention is to .provide a collapsible screen, thus doing away with frame work. By using our improved screen, the screen may be folded, rolled up and placed in any convenient storage, or carried in the baby carriage, when so desired.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a. ruffle attached to the perimeter of our improved screen. lVithin the above mentioned ruflie there is concealed a coiled spring, which is used to shape the screen so as to fit snugly over baby carriage bodies, varying in size and form.
The invention will be more particularly described in connection with the specific description hereinafter to be given.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a perspective View of the improved screen attached to the body and top of a baby carriage; F 2 is a top plan view of the device with the side wings extended; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the device when folded and rolled.
By referring to Fig. 1, it will be seen that we have provided. a carriage body 1, attached to this carriage body 1 is an ordinary top 2, the screen 3 fitting securely around the front and side portions of the body 1 and the front edge of the top 2.
By referring to Fig. 2, it will be seen that we have provided a central portion 4-; attached to this central portion 4 are wings 5 and 6. These wings are attached to the central portion 4 by means of a fabric hinge 7.
It is understood that other material than fabric may be used in making these hinges, but the material so used is to be pliable and a material which may be easily sewed. The rufi'led portion 11 is attached to the perimeter of the screen 3 by means of sewing, or in any other suitable way. In placing the screen 3 upon the baby carriage we have provided a coil spring 8, with a suitable hook 9, which is used to draw the spring suiiiciently to fit the body 1 and the top 2 of the carriage.
By referring to Fig. 2, it will be seen we have provided a ring 10 at the lower point of the wing 6, which is used to attach this portion of the screen to the body portion of the carriage.
In order to have a collapsible screen and at the same time one that will hold its shape, we have used a metallic screen. It is understood, however, that any other form of screening which has like properties, may be substituted.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of baby carriage body, provided with a top, a screen comprising a central portion having parallel sides and ends, hinged wings attached thereto along the sides, the hinges made of fabric, a ruffle attached to the perimeter of said central por tion and wings, a coil spring held within the ruffled portion and means for attaching the ends of said spring, substantially as described for the purposes set forth.
2. I11 a device of the class described, a baby carriage screen comprising a central portion having parallel ends and sides, side wings attached thereto by means of fabric hinges, a rufile attached to the perimeter of the screen, a coil spring carried within the rufiie, substantially as described for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatu res.
LEOPOLD N. STERLING. CHAS. J. HARRIS.
