a citizen of the United States, residing at Catskill, in the county of Greene and State of New York, have. invented. a certain new and useful Improvement in Furnaces for ;Water-Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
This case is a divisional application of 1N0. 858,603, Charles J. Reilly, water heater,
filed Aug. 26, 1914.
My invention relates to furnaces for water heating, devices, particularly such as are adapted for the use of various kinds of oil,
such as kerosene, as fuel.

In view r of the necessity of such device for use in heating water in the household, "and for many commercial purposes in thermal districts, cities, towns and villages, where no M artificlal or natural gas can be secured'for the purpose, and where gasolene if used for the purpose is dangerous to life and property, I have invented an arrangement in which ordinary kerosene or crude oil can be used for the purpose efficiently without fear of any danger, externalheat or obnoxious odors. The greatest benefit will be derived in many cases by those who have a water heating apparatus connected'to a furnace or coal cook stoves, only used for a few monthsv in each year, thus necessitating resorting to I laborious and troublesome means of secur= the furnace.

In the heater housing B is the coil B connectedwith pipes .C at top' and bottom as indicated. I use a double conical coil as indicated with the baffle plate P at the middle and narrowest portion to prevent the hot gases from passing up through the Gen ter of the coil. 7
loose bed of asbestos U to absorb the oil that is allowed to run out of the perforation in the cap H for use inheating up the generator in starting up the apparatus V is a tube leading from the water circulating pipe C down to just above the baffle plate of the generator, and it is controlled by the valve V. Through it water may be discharged upon the baflie plate.
X is an auxiliary reservoir and Y a valve connected with the pipe E, whereby the supply of kerosene may be cut off when the auxiliary reservoir is full, the latter being a charge for a specific piece of work or time.
Z is the cold water inlet pipe which leads I to the bottom of the receptacle A, and Z the hot water service pipe which leads from the top thereof.
Z is a stand or bracket on which the receptacle is supported, and Z is a like stand or bracket on which the furnace is supported.
X is a check valve or air release communicating with the reservoir X to permit air to enter at the top to displace the liquid which runs out when the valve Y is shut and the valve F is open. It, however, does not permit the discharge of oil'when the system is full.
The use and operation of my invention is as follows: The cold water and the hot water pipes are connected to the distributing system of the house in such manner that the receptacle stands full of water, and under normal conditions this water will be cold. If now, the operator desires to heat the water, he will turn the valve ring L so as to expose the interiorof the furnace. He will then open the valves Y and F sufliciently to allow oil to enter through the pipes E and G to the interior of the furnace and into the bed of asbestos U in the bottom of the furnace. He now closes valves Y and F, and by match or taper lights the oil in the asbestos within the furnace, and this oil burning will bring the generator to such a temperature as will cause the formation of gas. The operator now opens the valves Y and F, whereupon the oil which passes through the pipe E into the generator emerges from the cap H as gas, and as such it is immediately burned.
The products of combustion pass upwardly through the top of the furnace, through the heater, and 1f the damper S is open, out through the stack and chimney into the open air. Such products of combustion however, pass laterally upwardly through the coils B being deflected by the baflie plate P, so that at that point all of the products of combustion will have passed through the lower set of coils and thereafter will pass inwardly through the upper set of coils, thus heating the water which passes through these coils.
If the operator desires to heat a certain specified amount of water or to have the apparatus run for a predetermined period, he will open the valve Y, or otherwise manipu late the valves so that the auxiliary reservoir X fills with oil, and he may then close the valve Y and proceed as above, whereupon the tire will be maintained only so long as the oil in the auxiliary reservoir lasts.
In apparatus of this kind trouble is frequently experienced with respect to the formation of soot and like deposits on the coils. For this reason I provide the pipe V and controlling valve 7, so that when the valve WV is open a certain amount of water will pass through the heater and be discharged upon the hot baflie plate G when it is im mediatcly converted into steam, and this steam serves to clear the exterior surfaces of the coils of the deposits thereon due to the passage of the products of combustion.
I claim:
1'. The combination with a combustion chamber of a gas generating coil located in said chamber above the air supply, a heating and deflecting plate integral with the coil, :1. burner located beneath said plate, a gas supply pipe leading from the generating coil to said burner, an oil supply pipe communicating with the generator, and means for discharging water in a liquid form upon the upper surface of said plate independent of the gas and oil supply.
2. The combination with a combustion chamber having an absorbent wick-like bottom, of a gas generating coil located in said chamber above the air supply, a {heating and deflecting plate integral with the coil, a burner located beneath said plate, a gassupply pipe leading from the genera-ting coil to said burner, and an oil supply pipe com municating with the generator, and means for discharging water in a liquid form upon the upper surface of said plate independent of the gas and oil supply.
3.
