SILAS BALL, OF WEST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
CORD AND TWINE CUTTER/t Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Got. 26, 1915.
Application filed February 25, 1914. Serial No. 820,952.
T on whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SILAs BALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Orange, in the county of EsseX and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cord and Twine Cutters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cord and twine cutters and has for its primary object to provide a device of this character which will be of extremely simple construction, and which may be readily secured upon a counter or other suitable support, and which will be constructed in such a manner that danger of catching the fingers beneath the cutting knife will be eliminated.
Another object is to provide a device of this character in which the base plate will be provided with a guard member adjacent the point of the curved cutting blade having a lower cutting face and also mounted upon the base plate, the guard also serving to guide the twine to position beneath the blade.
A further object is to generally improve and simplify the construction of devices of this character and increase the efficiency thereof without increasing the cost of the same.
WVith these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my in- I vention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention, Fig. 2 is a side elevation view thereof, Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, partly in section, and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view, taken on the plane of line 4.-1 of Fig. 1.
. Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts through the several views, 1 designates the base plate which is provided with a plurality of openings 2 to receive the securing members 3 by which the base plate may be secured upon a counter or other suitable support.
A cutting blade 1 is secured longitudinally of the base plate 1 and in a vertical plane by rivets 7 positioned through the angularly directed flange 8 thereof. The blade A is pointed, as indicated at 6, and the pointed end thereof is directed downwardly toward the base plate 1, defining a concave lower edge 5 which is sharpened to provide a cutting edge. A curved guard and guide member 9 is formed at the opposite end of the base plate 1 by striking a tongue upwardly out of said base plate 1, and bending up the material within the same. The free end of the guard member 9 is curved to define a concave lower surface 9 and is directed toward and spaced from the pointed end 6 of the blade 41-, whereby said memher 9 will serve as a guard and prevent engagement of the operators fingers with the end of the blade A and will also serve to properly guide the cord or twine to be cut beneath said blade.
From the foregoing, it will be readily apparent that I have provided a cord and twine cutter of extremely simple construction and operation and which may be read ily and cheaply manufactured, and will be highly efficient in use.
l/Vhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A cord cutter comprising a sheet metal base plate, a cutting blade secured to said base plate disposed longitudinally of the latter and in a vertical plane and having a pointed end directed toward said base plate to define a concaved lower cutting edge and a flat guard member struck out from In testimony whereof I affix my signature said sheet metal base plate under the p0intin presence of two witness:
ed end of said cutting blade curved to de- SIL B I fine a convex top surface, a concave lower AD surface and having the free end directed Witnesses:
toward and spaced from the pointed enr. PAULINE M. VAN DENDEREN,
of said cutting blade. 7 MARY ELLA BALL.
