GEORGE G. LU'IZ, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
'IBARBEBS CHAIR-BACK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 23, 1914. Serial No. 846,807.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. LUTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbers ChairBacks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in barbers chairs and more particularly in an attachment whereby the ordinary adults barbers chair can be readily transformed into a high chair suitable for childrens use.
One object of this invention is to provide means whereby any chair now in use can be readily transformed at a very small cost by merely substituting my combined back and attachment in place of the ordinary cushion back.
Another object of my invention is to provide a seat for children which is convenient to operate, neat in appearance and practical.
Further advantages and details will be brought out in the description, which now follows.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of an ordinary barbers chair with my attachment thereon and in operating position, Fig. 2 discloses my invention removed from the chair the supplemental seat being in position as a seat, Fig. 3 is a similar view of Fig. 2 but showing the underside arrangement of the supplemental seat and its cooperating bracket, Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line g of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 5 is a section taken on the line e.e of Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on the line aem of Fig. 2 and showing the supplemental seat in closed position. Fig. 7 is a detail of the seat operating brace.
Like numerals correspond to like parts in the several figures of the drawings.
The numeral 5 represents a back board shaped to correspond to the back frame 6 of the barbers chair. This back board is fastened within the frame by any suitable means such as bolts 7. Carried upon the upper half of the back board is the usual cushion 8. Beneath said cushion I provide grooves 9 in which slide members 10, said members carrying at their lower end and hingeably attached thereto members 1.1. In said members 11 are provided the slots 12 by means of which a supplemental seat portion 13 is adjustably attached thereto by members 14. In the center of my back board I provide a slot 15 in which I secure a member 16. This member 16 being oii'set from the sides of said slot and having a slideway 17 therein. To the frontand under side of the edge of the seat 13 are rigidly secured brackets 18 between which is pivoted a member 19. A member 20 is pivoted to the member 19 and the free end of said member 20 is slidably secured in the slot 17. An offset portion 21 is provided upon the member 19 which enters a recess 22 in the member 20 when the bracket is in open position and prevents the bracket from opening beyond a limited amount. Upon the under side of the seat I provide recesses 23, which are metal bound along one edge as at 24:. These recesses are attached to receive tongue 25 of the members 26 secured upon the back board 5 and thus holding the seat securely when in a closed position.
The seat 13 is made slidable on the members 11 in order that, when the seat is dropped to form a portion of the back, the tongues or stops 25 may be caused to engage in the slots or recesses 23, and thereby hold the seat 1 1 in close engagement with the back member 8. The purpose of making the seat- 13 slidable on the members 11 is to form a tight continuous joint between the fixed and hinged sections when the latter is dropped to form part of the back.
The operation of my device is as follows: When the seat is in an open position as shown in Fig. 5 and it is desired to close the same the members 1920 are pushed in the direction of the back until it breaks the toggle after which the seat can be swung downwardly until in line with the back, then the seat is pushed upwardly until the members 24 and 25 are in alinement at which time the seat can be pushed entirely back against the back board and locked in its closed position. To open this operation is reversed.
Having described my invention what I claim is 1. The combination with a chair back; of a supplemental seat hinged to said back and slidable to and from the hinge axis, stops carried on said. back, means on the under side of the seat arranged to engage said Patented ea. as, rare.
stops When the seat is in folded against the back, and collapsible hold the seat raised.
2. The combination With a chair back comprising a frame, and a back rest mountposition means to ed on the upper part of the frame; of a supplemental seat hinged to said back and slidable to and from the hinge axis, a hinged strut for said seat, stops carried on the back 10 frame, and means carried by the supplemental seat and engageable with said stops when the seat is folded against the back frame and engaged against the back rest.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE C. LUTZ.
