TOILET BRUSH. APPLICATION FIILEI) JUNE 8, I9I4.

Y IIIIII IIII III I III fa citizen of the United States,
@El A* WILLIAM H. BRIDGES, or GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
'TOILET-BRUSH.
To all whom t mcg/'concern I Be it known that I, WILLIAM I-I. BRIDGES, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet- Brushes, of which the following isa specification.
My invention relates to improvements in toilet brushes, and its objects are: First, to provide a brush of which the bristles may be readily folded down to Vform a very thin brush to carry in the pocket. Second, to provide a brush that may be readily assembled or taken apart for renewing the bristles, and, third, to provide a means whereby;` the bristles may be locked firmly in any desired position.` I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the brush handle with the bristles in normal position for brushing clothes, &c. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal Vsection of the frame Vwith the bristles foldedjdown inside the frame and one formof inclosing case shown thereon in longitudinal section. Fig. 3 1s v a transverse section of the frame with the v indentures in the pintles on the ends ofthe bristle holders.
bristles in normal position. Fig. 4 is a planv of the bristle holderl detached from the frame and with no bristles connected therewith. Fig. 5 is an end view of the i bristle holder showing gear teeth by means of which the holder'is actuated to adjust the bristles as desired. Fig. -6 is a plan of the actuating plate by means of which the bristle holders are adjusted. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section of the frame showing the side for the reception of Fig. 8 is a plan of a short piece of the back of the body of the brush bristle holders may be locked in the desired positions. of the brush frame showing a modified form of case for protecting the brush when folded together for carrying in the pocket. Fig. 10 is a transverse section of the case shown in Fig. 2. Y
Similar letters refer throughout the several views.
The frame 1 of this brush should be made of aluminum, or other light sheet metal that may be readily stamped into the desired form, and the sides should be provided with a series of small holes, or depressions,

. as c e, (preferablysmall conical depressions) to receive the conical pintles 8 8 on the ends of the bristle holders 2. This form of frame willbe slightly springy so that the bristle ,holders may be readily slid into, or out of ,place in the handle, as desired, and may be readily made to oscillate for the purpose of carrying the bristles to the position desired.
The bristles 4 are secured in the bristle holders 4,2 in the usual manner of securing them inan ordinary brush back, the only diiference beingV that each cross, or transverse line of bristles is mounted independent of all other transverse lines, and each is arranged to be adjusted independent of the others.
l/Vhile there are many ways in which the bristle holders may be mounted for convenient adjustment, I have found that the most convenient and available means is to make two or three gear teeth, 3, on each bristle holder, and as there is not sufficient space between the bristle holders to permit of using full gear wheels I find it necessary, or at least advantageous to make these teeth integral with, and on-one side only, of the holders, as indicated in Fig. 5, and I actuate the holders by means of a slide 5 which is mounted in the frame 1 directly back of the teeth 3 on the holders. This slide is provided with a series of openings, 9, in which the teeth 3 travel as the slide is moved longitudinally for actuating the holders. This slide is manipulated by means of a handle 7, that is securely attached to, or made integral with the slide, and which passes out through a slot, 6, in the back of the frame 1 in position to be readily accessible to the operator.
When assembling these brushes the slide 5 is'placed upon the inner surface of the back of the frame 1 with the handle 7 projecting out through the slot 6, when the several Ybristle holders 2 arersprung in place in the frame in normal, or projected position, as in Fig. 1, with one of the gear teeth 3 passing through its adjacent opening 9 in the slide 5, until all the bristle holders are in position and the brush is in condition for use. I provide for locking the slide in place to hold the bristles in the desired positions, by means of a latch 12 that is pivotally secured, or hinged to the back as at c. This latch has an opening f through it in position to interlock with the handle 7 when the slide is in the position. indicated in Figs. 2 and 8, and is made of a proper length so it will leave roe 'l forms naif gj y 1,141,652
