TOOTH-BRUSH.
Application filed September 8, 1914, Serial No. 860,581.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES J. CoFFEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tooth Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tooth brushes, and its object is to provide a tooth brush having a casing into Which the brush is foldable when not in use, said casing being so constructed as to serve as the handle of the brush.
This object is attained by means of a novel combination and arrangement of parts to he hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is an elevation of the brush-head swung out of the casing, the latter being shown in section, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the brush.
Referring specifically to the drawing, a casing 20 is provided, the same having'a hinged lid 21, the hinge 22 of this lid being on the inside of the casing. The back 23 of the brush head 24 is carried by a plate 25 having at its forward end a marginal flange 26 within which the corresponding end of the back 23 seats. The opposite side portions of the flange converge so that when the brush back is pushed forwardly, it will be wedged therebetween. The rear end of the plate 25 has a lug 27 through which a screw stem 28 is threaded. One end of this stem engages the inner edge of the brush back, and upon advancing said stem, the brush back is pushed forward and wedged between the converging portions of the flange 26. A sleeve 29 covers that portion of the stem which is between the lug 27 and the inner end of the brush back. Upon backing the screw stem, the brush head is released and may be removed for cleaning.
The inner end of the screw stem 28 is pivoted in the casing 20 by means of trunnions 30 mounted in the side walls thereof.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 19, 1917.
Renewed February 17, 1917. Serial No. 149,377.
The adjacent end wall of the casing has a notch 31 in which the screw stem seats when the brush is swung out of the casing for use, as shown in Fig. 1. Upon swinging the brush back into the casing as shown dotted in Fig. 1, and closing the lid 21, the brush is completely housed. The lid has a suitable catch 32 for holding the same closed, said catch being forked to straddle the screw stem.
, The casing 20 also serves as the handle of the brush when the latter is swung out of the same for use.
The device hereinbefore described provides a small, compact and sanitary casing for the brush, and as the hinge 22 is on the inside of the casing it is concealed when the lid 21 is closed, thereby giving the casing a smooth external appearance. Upon backing the screw stem 28, the brush-head 24 may be removed. Thus, the brush-head 24 may be removed and renewed when worn.
I claim:
1. The combination with a casing, of a brush-head supporting plate, a clamping screw for securing the brush-head on said plate, a pivotal connection between the screw and the casing to allow the screw and the plate to be swung into and out of the casing, and a closure for the casing.
2. The combination with a casing, of a brush-head supporting plate having a. marginal flange at its forward end, the opposite side portions of said flange converging, a screw carried by the rear end of the plate, said screw being adjustable toward the forward end of the plate, a'pivotal connection between the screw and the casing to allow the screw and the plate to be swung into and out of the casing, and a closure for the casing.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES J. OOFFEY.
