seat when extended or unfolded in another direction forms a couch and lastly all of the parts may be compactly folded upon each other for shipping, packing and the like. i
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a which- Figure 1 is a perspective of :my convertible chair ready for use simply as a chair. Fig. 2 is a perspective of the same in its folded or collapsed position. Fig. 3 is a perspective of the device converted into a table. My convertible chair comprises the seat frame 1 formed with the projected terminal lip 2 to which the transverse cleat 3 is hinged as at 1 and to said cleat one pair of legs 5 is secured; said legs being provided with the transverse brace 6 and pivoted as at 7 to another pair of legs 8 which terminally carrya brace 9 upon which said legs stand. The legs 5 are slotted as at 5 to permit movement of the pivot 7 and are further provided with spring catch 5 by which said pivot may be locked in position. The seat frame 1 aforesaid is formed with longitudinal slots 10, 10 through which the curved arms 11 movably extend that are connected to the back frame 12 which is Specification of Letters Patent.
part of said specification and in Patented Get. as, rare.

hingedas at 18 to said seat frame. Said seat frame is further provided with releasable locking means 15 for the arms 11 where by the back frame 12 may be locked in an adjusted position with respect to the said seatframe. To the end of the back frame remote from the seat frame the back 16 is pivoted as at 17 and said back is provided with lateral lugs 18, 18 which are capable of engagement with the back frame so that the said back may swing inwardly only or in the directionof the seat frame 1. To one end of the back 16the seat 19 is releasably secured by links 20 engaging pins14; while opposite end of said seat is hinged to an auxiliary seatj2l as at 22 which auxiliary seat is hinged as at 22f? to the seat frame 1;
the seat 19 is provided with a wing 26 and a brace 27 for the same, said wing and brace being adapted to fold fiat'upon said seat and occupy recesses 25 in said seat when not in use. The auxiliary seat 21 is provided with a wing 23 and a supporting brace 24: therefor both of which, when not in use, may be collapsed into recesses 25 and 28 in said seat.
Operation: In Fig. 1 the device is shown seat 21 being collapsed upon each other in the seat frame 1 and the respective wings and supports of said seat and auxiliary seat being collapsed upon them; to form a stool the back 16 and back-frame 12 may be moved down upon the auxiliary seat, the arms 11 occupying the position shown in dotted lines; the back and back-frame may be inclined at any angle with the seat, less than 90 degrees, by means of the arms 11 and locking means 15. To fold the device the stool is first formed as just described and the supporting legs 5 and 8 moved into planes parallel with each other as shown in Fig. 2.
To make a table of the device the back 16 is linked to the seat 19 which seat is swung, together with the auxiliary seat, into vertical position at right angles to the seat frame to which it is hinged; to extend this table the seat '19 is raised into a horizontal position and the auxiliary seat inclined to such a degree with the horizontal as to permit the wing 26 to be dropped down upon the auxiliary seat and there retained in position by means of the support 27; the said wing 23 being in collapsed position at this I .time. To form a cot of the device the back 16 is disconnected fromthe seat 19 and the latter, together with the auxiliary seat, ex-
tended into a horizontal position with their wings dropped tothe floor to serve as supports as best illustrated in Fig. 5.7 The {wings of both the seat and the auxiliary seat are of such a depth as to correspond approximately to the depth of the supports of the seat frame in their operative position. W hat is claimed is 5 V r 1. In a convertible chair, a seat frame formed with a terminal lip, a cleat hinged to said lip, supporting legs for said seat frame 15 i and cleat, a back frame hinged to said seat frame, guide arms for said back frame auxiliary seat, and supports carried by said seat and auxiliary seat for their respective relation to said seat and auxiliary seat.
'2. In a convertible chair, a seat frame formed with a terminal lip, a cleat hinged to said lip, supporting legs for said seat frame and cleat, a back frame hinged to said seat frame, guide arms for said back frame operatively associated with said seat frame, a back pivoted in said back frame, a recessed seat releasably hinged to said back, a recessed auxiliary seat hinged to said seat and to said seat frame, folding wings carried by said seat and by said auxiliary seat capable of being disposed in the recessed portions of said seat and auxiliary seat and supports carried by said seat and auxiliary seat for their respective wings.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
