Be it known that I, CURTIS JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Prescott, in thefcounty of Adams and State of lo Ya, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness Attachments, of which the following is a specitication.

My invention relates to an improvement in harness attachments, and more particularly to the layers used in connecting the breeching to the breeching-stay or hip-straps- These have hitherto been made ot leather, and one edge of this leather has been stitched by machinery to the wear leather or sate, and then the other edge required stitching by hand. Y

The purpose of my present invention is to do away with all this and produce a much cheaper, stronger, and more durable layer composed of sheet-1netal that can be made up in less time, and can be riveted to the wear leather or safe instead of being stitched thereto.

The wear leather or sate l0 is of the usual form and design, and is fastened rigidly and permanently to the layer by means of rivets l1, 1l, extending through the several holes 2, 2, in the metal layer, and the holes 12, l2, in the wear leather or safe. In this way, a very simple, strong, and durable layer is formed, which will wear as long as the most durable part of the harness. Necessarily it can be made much cheaper than the present form. of layer-'which has to be stitched, and then under circumstances of unusual difficulty, and when japanned and finished, it does not look ditl'lerent from the present leather layer, and a casual observer would scarcely detect the difference.

I claim:

A sheet metal layer for harness having rivet holes located at predetermined distances apart along its longitudinal center, provided with an elongated slot between two of the rivet holes and constructed with spurs at the edges at points between the rivet holes, in connec tion with a buckle the tongue of which extends through the slot, the slotted end of the layer inclosing the pintle ot' the buckle aud with the rivet holes at the opposite ends of the slot in registry, the opposite end ot said layer inclosing a loop bar, the two rivet holes nearest that end being in registry, strap loops embracing the edges oit the layer and fastened thereto by the said spurs, and a. wear leather or sate secured to the layer by means of rivets extending through and upset in the several rivet holes hereinbet'ore specitied.
