DEVICE FOR IDENTIFYING CRI'tiHNdLS AND OTHER PERSONS THROUGH COMBINATION- PICTURE.
Specification. of Eetters Eatent.

Application filed February 1d. 191%. Serial No. 818,677.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Crrars'rornsn J. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Identifying Criminals and other Persons through Combination-Picture, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for identifying criminals and other persons through combination-picture, and has forits 0b]e(5l3 a photograph holder adjustably mounted on a base in which the photograph of the person to be identified is held, and a plurality of transparent frames on which are mounted, painted, or otherwise applied, representations of hats, caps, suits of clothing and other articles of wearing apparel which are arranged to be placed over the picture, and to properly conform with the picture so as to properly dress the per-v son in various "costumes for identification.
- Figure 1, is aperspective view of my invention. Fig. 2, 1s a vertical sectional view of the same with a part broken away. Fig. 3, is a detail, sectional, perspective view of the photograph holder showing its construc-' tion and the manner in which it is slidably' mounted on the support for adjusting the same. Fig. 4, is a detail erspective view with parts broken away s owing' the pin hinge by which the several identificationplates are detachably connected and held in connection In referring to the drawings in detail 5, indicates a case in the form of a box, in which is located supporting straps 6, on which are held the transparent plates and in which the same are housed when the device is not in use. On the upper portion of the case or box, 1s provided a top 7, consisting of a frame having the center portion 0 en as indicated by the numeral 8, and on t e top providing suficient space for the insertion of the strip 13, forming a part of thephm tograph holder 14:, said strip 13 bei-n bent .downwardl after the photograph older has been s'ht' at the points indicated by the numeral 15. The two-sides and bottom Tdge side of the casing or box, and by means oi,
this handle the entire photograph plate can be shifted to any desired position on the top so as to properly correspond with the articles of wearingapparel which are designed on the transparent frames 19*, when folded over or laid on the top ot the photograph.
The transparent frames'19, are provided with hinges 20, of the pin type, and on the box is also provided a corresponding hinge member in which the pin 21 of the hinge is permitted to be inserted when placing the transparent plates imposition for use.
In the box and on the slide 6, are located numerous plates hav ng various designs ofconstruct a device on which a hotograph is placed, and a transparent p ate placed overthe same on. which is imprinted or otherwise applied, various representations of wearing apparel, either in black or in col. ors, an which are so arranged as to dress the photograph for the purpose of identiing a person. It has ofttimes occurred that in identifying criminals, the person wishing to make the identification may not recognize the criminal by viewing the photograph taken by the Bertillion system, but by placing a hat, cap, or body garment over the photograph the facial expressions is changed and by that manner the person may be identified for the reason that the person may have recognized the criminal by having a certain color or suit or certain style of hen ar. When the device is not in use the identification lates are removed and placed inside of the on out of the way.
Having fully described my invention what I claim is 1. A device of the class described comprising a case, a photograph supporting plate adjustably mounted on the top of said case and a plurality of transparent plates on which is imprinted various articles of Wear- 5,fing apparel hingedly mounted on four sides of said case and arranged to be folded over the photographic supporting plate, substan- 2. A device of the class described compris- 10 ing a rectangular case, a photograph sup-- porting plate' mounted on the top of the case and arranged to be shifted to various positions on said top; a plurality of transparent plates hinged to the sides of the case and ar- 15 ranged to be folded over the photograph,
each of said transparent plates rovided with a picture of a certain article 0 apparel which is to be placed over the photo graph for dressing the picture; and slides located in the frame for supporting various 20 CHRISTOPHER J. SMI'IH.
