CAP,
ApplicationrfiledOctober 2r,- mar Serial No. 63, 821? My present invention. relates generally to articles o-f'headwear, and has particular reference 130 caps of the type which embodies the;slitting-:operationzconsists in making only'vtwo symmetrical uf-shape'd cuts into the adjustable earla-p portions, and tea method of: making thesame.
Itis an objectof the;inventionv to provide a cap having? anaearlap portion.capableqof tionrwhen not in; use; and provided-zwith binding elements; constituting chin sta'zaps; or the like.
Another" object of; the invention is'itb" provide a portion; ofthe same general natureaas the earlap portion. and. designedato protect the facefofwearer, and which will bestermed 7 facturing: the cap inaccordance with; a
method whereby a single seriesio'f operations will: simultaneously produce-the ear-lap]: portion, the chin. straps, More particularly, invention to include in :thefimethodtofmanufacturei V a series of" extremely" simple operations in the nature-5 of slitting aflblanki'of material in a' mannerwhereby al'lz? the I pertions referred to will 'be. produced.
7 Another object of'the inventi'on issto: provide a capparticularly suitable for riniants V and constructed of ya single tubular blank of preferably knitted material,- theivarious iportionsof? thecompl eted '1 article formingintegral portions-of theoriginaliblankandibeing so constructed and arrangedcgastotpresentia I neat and compact appearance andtolprodiice a fin lashed article 'of rhigh' quality 'andiefllciency. A :feature'ofztheinventionxlies inconstruet ing the entire completed article-from? an single L tubular blank" having? a length: nov greaten-thanrtl1e: peripheral distan'rez from,

larly to? F1gz 1,".it' will be seen'th'at I" have taken a right cylindrical tubular blank 10 and have secured together the upper edge oft-he blank t'o-nform ahead portion 11 subin shape andpropompon 12; of any suitable sort. The marginaltlower portion ofthe tubular blank 10 will constitute, when the articl'e is completed, an integral portion capablefof be- .ing- :doublejdi back' over the head portion: 11
alon'g 'a'transverse fold 13" to form a hinged portion 1 comprising an earlap portion and a face' -POrtion:
Irr accordance with my warmer-damn rfactnreg -I. make two;symmetricalsl-itsin'to the r lower edge 14- of-th'ei. blank" 10, the slits being cutfsubstantiallyalong lines denoted by the reterencezn merals '14; a nd'1 5,.tl1atis, along; linesdefininer symmetrically-1 deposed disconnected: each sewn-e11 has sateen- 1 normally brought downwardly into between the slits constitutes the face portion 17 and comprises a nose-guard portion 18 and lateral extensions 19, the edges of the nose-guard portion and the inner edges 20 of the extensions defining in effect cut-out portions for the eyes of the wearer when the face portion is in use. This feature is clearly shown in Fig, 1. It will be obvious that the extensions 16 will normally nest with the face portion 17 by completely occupying the cut-out portions just referred to.
Means are provided for detachably attaching the extensions 16 and the face portion 17 to the crown pOrtionl'l when the cap is in normal position. I have illustratively shown buttons 21 carried by the crown portion 11 and adapted to engage with button holes adjacent to the tips of the -xtensions 16; and I have shown buttons 22 similarly carried by the crown portion-11. and adapted to be engaged by button holes provided at the extremities of the extensions 19. I
For the purpose of enabling the chin strap extensions 16 to be attached together when they are brought beneath the chin of a wearer, I provide one thereof with a button 23 adjacent to the button hole and adapted to engage the button hole in the other chin strap. It will be noted that the button 23 is normally invisible, being attached to the underside of the chin strap when the latter is in normal position attached to the crown 11. i
I also prefer to provide buttons 2% at or near the junction of the chin straps 1.6 with the earlap portion, these buttons'beingalso invisible, and being so disposed as to be engageable by the button holes inthe extensions 19 when the face portion: is
use. I
It will be noted that where knitted material is employed I have utilized theiiormal elasticity thereof, because although the chin straps 16 normally nest with the face pornevertheless they are drawn out of this nested position when the earlap portion-is lowered.
into. which the chin straps normally nest are As a resultthe cut-out portions made available for registering with the eyes of the wearer. I consider this an important feature of the invention because I enabled to produce a cap simple in construction and method of manufacture, requiring even less material than has been necessitated heretofore, and nevertheless provided with protecting portions ,tensive said lower portion folded back onto vthe head portion along a transverseufold, said'lower portion having which is extremely that my cup is not limited to infants use.
nor to knitted material,
use in vast applications.
It will also and may find exnumber of other be obvious that I have constructed the cap in such a manner that if s desired, the earlap portions alone maybe utilized. The face portion 1'7 in such an event constitutesa rather pleasing ornamentation for the front of the cap. It is easily conceivable that for certain uses the face portion may not be desirable at all, and insuch acase I'may construct. the cap to have'the face portion permanently attached by any suitable means to the crown portion 11. It will thus be seen that my invention has produced a hi hly efficient article, the p ssibilities of its uses and application being merely illustrated and suggested in the it will be noted furof manufacture is' of extreme simplicity and 1 cheapncss, and although I have shown one form ofcairrying out my method,"various modifications there of may be made by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit of the invention. f
It is therefore intended that the various details herein described and illustrated for the purpose of explaining the nature of my invention be interpreted as illustrative, and not. in a limiting sense. 1 V i Having thus described my invention and illustrated its use, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1.1 A cap comprising an tion,

Nation 17 when the cap is in normal position.
slanting U-shaped, the axes of the two Us being angularly upward toward each other when the lower portion is turned down, the slits being nearest each other at the curved base parts of the Us, the lower leg of each U when the lower portion is turned down extending to the lower edge of said flap, said lower portion providing said ear-lap portion,
the portion between the Us providing said portion which is ornamental when turned up and capable of functioning as a faceguard when turned down, and means to removably fasten each side of said last mentioned portion to prevent flapping thereof.
3. A cap comprising an upper head portion, and a lower head portion integral therewith, the lower portion comprising an earlap portion, two chin strap portions, and an ornamental portion shaped so as to normally nest between said chin strap portions, fastening means to fasten said nesting portions in normal nesting positions when turned up, fastening means to fasten said ornamental portion when turned down so as to provide a face guard thereof. and fastening means to fasten said chin strap portions together when turned down.
4:. A cap comprising an upper head portion, and a lower portion integral therewith,
said lower portion being capable of being folded back onto the head portion along a transverse fold, said lower portion comprising an earlap portion and at the front therefolded back onto the head portion along a "transverse fold, said lower portion having flaps at the front thereof formed by two unconnected. and independent curved slits, whereby the said lower portion of the cap is divided into three parts, eachiof which parts is adapted to be turned up or dow independently of the other parts.
