To all whom it may concern Be it known that I RACHEL SUDIAH, a .citizen of the United tates, residing in the city of New York, borough of Bronx, county o fold-over collars, and the object of the invention is a collar of the character specified which, while embodying all the advantages of the ordinary softcollar, overcomes the disadvantages, now inherent in these col- 5 lars, of sagging in front, and thus becoming unsightly.

The present invention overcomes the sagging ofsoft collars. at the front and their failure to retain their shape, in asimple,eco- 0 nomical and efiicient manner, and, speaking generally, embodies a member positioned near each .of the ends of the turned over portion pf the collar, whereby said ends are precluded from rolling, sagging ,or otherwise losing their shape. Moreover, what is particularly important, is thefact that the positioning of these members, as specified, enables them to form a support for the front portion of the band of the collar, adjacent the button-holes therein, whereby said band is also effectively supported against sagging. In the specific andpreferredform of practising my invention, a supporting member is positioned near the ends of the foldedover portion of the collar, in a substantially upright manner, and between the plies of said folded over portion, whereby said supporting .member is concealed from view when'the collar is worn', -yet serves to eflec- 40 tively retain the folded over portion of the collar and neckband thereof, particularly at the open, front portion of the collar, in a smooth, unsagging and tidy manner.

In this form of the invention, the supporting members are detachable.

Referring to the drawings, A indicates a soft folded over collar of the type commonly worn by men during the summer season. The collar is secured to the neckband-of the shirt by means of the usual buttons cooperating with the button-holes at the front and back of the collar.

The collar overlaps at the front, and button-holes a, coiiperate with the front collar button to hold the lower portion of the neckband B of the collar tightly around the neck of the shirt, while the upper edge of said neckband 13 is held tight by a cooperating button a and button-hole a situated on one free end of the collar band and on the other free end thereof, respectively.

The folded over portion 0 is provided with extending members D positioned substantially upright near the open front of the collar, and between the plies of the material forming the turned over portion, thereof. These members D are preferably inserted and sewed in place during the manufacture of the collar, and are so secured by stitching, or the like, that they are concealed from view when the collar is worn. These members may, however, be made detachable as shown in Fig. 5, so that they may be taken out when the collar is laundered.

The function of the members D is twofold, viz., to maintain the turned over portion C of the collar in an extended position, and to form a support for the neckband B, and these features are embodied in the collar illustrated. I

When the collar A is in place about the neck of the weare'r,its neckband B is held usual collar buttons cooperating with the button-holes, a, atthe lower portion of the neckband, andthe cooperating button and button-hole, a and a at the upper edge thereof, as is usual. tight circumferentially by means of the proper form, The turned-over portion, C,

the neckband thereof, so that, when positioned on the wearer, the lower edgeof the turned over portion will rest on the shirt bosom, or in the case of a soft shirt, on the collar bone of the wearer. Thus, the members, D, sewed in the turned-over portion of the collar, will serve to maintain said folded overt-portion in an extended position, while their lower ends lightly rest on the shirt bosom or on the collar bone of the wearer, and support the neckband of the collar against such sagging, as is usually the case in collars of this type.

It has heretofore been common to apply stays and stiffening members in collars, particularly in those worn by women. Applicant has, however, conceived novel means for supporting a soft turn over collar of the mens style, which means is extr'emelysimple, yet highly eflicient, and is not visible when incorporated in the collar., Moreover, when the straight, rigid supporting members are stitched in place between the plies of material from which the turned-over portion of the collar is formed, the extending points of said turned-over portion are held extended, and at the same time the collar band is supported by virtue of the fact that the lower ends of the'rigid members rest on the collar bone or shirt bosom of the wearer.

It is desirable, in order to obtain the best results, to make the extension members, D in length, equal I to or greater than the breadth of the neckband of the collar, whereby the lower edge of the members D will, at all times, rest upon the shirt bosom or collar bone of the wearer, thus insuring the proper extension of the turned over portion of the collar and the supporting of the neckband thereof.

In Fig. 5 of the drawings, I have illustrated one method by whiclrthe supporting members D, may be detachably retained between the plies of the turned-over portion C,

of the collar. According to this embodiment of the invention, a little slit d, is made along the line of junction between the turned-over portion of the collar and the neckband, which slit extends through one of the inside plies but does not extend all the way through the collar, and lines of stitching, d, are provided to form a channel intermediate the plies. be slipped into the position shown in Fig. 5, when the turned-over portion of the collar is turned up, and, when the collar is turned down to its normal position, the slit (1, will be closed, and the member D. cannot inadvertently work out of place.

Havin thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-

As a new article of marmfacture, a turnedover soft collar embodying a substantially lip-standing neck-band and a turned-over portion, said collar being provided at each end of the turned-over portion with a substantially upright strip of substantially rigid material, of different material from that composing the body of the collar, said strips being entirely separate and distinct from each other, and approximately of the same length as the height of the turned-over portion of the collar and positioned in pockets located between the plies of said collar, the turned-over portion being in height substantially thesame as the height of the neck-. the lower ends band of the collar, whereby of the supporting strips are adapted to rest upon the shirt bosom or collarbone of the wearer for the purpose of maintaining said turned-over portion in extended position and simultaneously supporting the neck band against sagging.
