ADJUSTABLE COLLAR BAND.
Application filed September 22, L924.
My invention relates to neckbands for shirts, and more particularly to an adjustable neckband.
An object of my invention is to provide a neckband for a shirt which is readily and quickly adjustable, and which is at the same time comfortable to the neck.
A further object of my invention is to provide an adjustable neckband in which there are few parts and the operation of adjustment can be readily and quickly effected.
A still further object of my invention is to provide an adjustable neckband in which the adjustment does not affect the relative position of the rear and front collar buttons which will always remain at diametrically opposite portions of the neckband.
Other objects of my invention are to provide an adjustable neckband which does not weaken the shirt structure, and which can be made at small cost.
With these and other objects in view, which may be incident to my improvements, the invention consists in the parts and combinations to be hereinafter set forth and claimed, with the understanding that the several necessary elements comprising my invention, may be varied in construction, proportions and arrangements, without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
In order to make my invention more clearly understood, I have shown in the accompanying drawings means for carrying the same into practical effect, without limiting the improvements in their useful applications to the particular constructions, which for the purpose of explanation, have been made the subject of illustration.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of my adjustable neckband, looking at the shirt from the front, with the neckband opened out to more plainly show the location of the parts;
Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of my neckband, such being taken from the rear of the shirt;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view with the parts opened out, taken from the rear of the shirt;
Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the collar button in the last hole for the small adjustment, with one of the end pieces thrown out of position to more clearly indicate the position of the parts.
Serial No. 739,095.
Referring to the drawings fora detailed description, I have shown a shirt 1 to which is stitched a movable neckband section 2 and a movable neckband section 3. Each neckband section is formed of a double thickness of cloth stitched at their edges by rows of stitching 4f. The neckband sections 2 and 3 are not stitched by the lower row of stitching t by which they are attached to theshirt, for their whole length to the shirt, but there is a portion 5 of the shirt to which no neckbands are attached. This portion 5 lies adjacent the middle rear portion of the neck, as can be plainly seen in Fig. 1. i i
The neckband section 2 is provided with a front collar button-hole 6. The neckband section 3 is provided with a corresponding front collar button-hole 7. The neckband section 2 is provided with a tapered over lapping end piece 8 formed of a double thickness of cloth, which forms the neckband section 2. The overlapping end piece 8 has formed therein collar button-holes 9, and its end is adapted to fit in a slot 10 formed in the outside layer of cloth of the neckband section 3. The end piece 8 fits through this slot 10 into the neckband section 3, and sewed to the end piece 8 is a tape 11 which runs through the neckband section 8 and is attached at its other end to the inside of the neckband 3 at 12. A loop 13 projects through a slot 14 formed in the neckband section 3.
The neckband section 3 is provided with an overlapping endpiece 15, which has slots 16 corresponding to the slots 9 of overlapping end piece 8. The collar button slots 16,
however, only pass through the outer thickness of the neckband, as indicated plainly in Fig. 4. The neckband section 2 has a slot 17 cut in its inner thickness of cloth through which the overlapping end piece projects. Attached to the overlapping end piece 15 is a tape 18 which runs in the neckband section 2 and is attached to the interior thereof, as indicated at 19. A loop 20 of the tape 18 projects through an aperture 21 in the neckband 2.
At the rear portion of the shirt between the movable neckband sections 2 and 3, and in that portion of the shirt indicated by the numeral 5, there is provided a flap 22 which projects upwardly, as plainly indicated in Figs. 3 and 4. The flap 22 is provided with a rear collar button aperture 23.
In making an adjustment of the neckband, a collar button 24 is placed in the collar button aperture 23 of the flap 22. The loops 13 and 20 projecting through the apertures I l and 21 of the neckbands 3 and 2, respectively, are grasped and pulled to reduce the size of the neck closure. By reason of the fact that both movable neclcband sections 2 and 3 are moved simultaneously there will be no danger in having the collar button 2% position at a point which is not diametrically opposite to the front collar button. lV hen the adjustment has been properly made, the flap with the collar button is inserted upwardly between the folds of the overlapping end piece 15. The inner fold of the overlapping end piece l5 protects the neck of the wearer from direct contact with the heel of the collar button. The shank of the collar button pro jccts out through one of the slots 16 formed in the outer fold of the overlapping end piece 15 and through one of the slots formed in the overlapping end piece 8. The neckbands are held in adjustment by means of the collar button. 7
'VVhere the adjustment is made as sinali as possible, there will be some luinching of the material of the shirt at the back, but this will be negligible and no inconvenience to the wearer.
\Vhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, 1 Wish it to be understood that I do not conline myself to the precise details of construction herein set forth by way of illustration, as it is apparent that many changes and variations may be made therein, by those skilled in the art, without departing from the spirit of the invention, or exceeding the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
I. In an article as described, two movable neckband sections each formed of two layers of cloth, whose lower ends are stitched to the shirt, overlapping end pieces formed by a continuation of the neckbands, one of the end pieces being perforated with collar button slots through both layers of cloth, and the other having corresponding collar button slots through only one layer of the cloth, whereby a collar button may be placed through the slots to regulate the size of the neckband, the overlapping end pieces being free from the shirt and siidable between the layers of said neckband sections.
2. In an article as described, a flap carried by the shirt for reception of the rear collar button, two movable neckband sections formed of a double thickness of cloth, whose lower ends are attached to the shirt. overlapping end pieces formed by a continuation of the neckbands, one of said pieces being perforated with collar but-ton slots through both thicknesses of cloth and the other through only one thickness, said overlapping end pieces being free from the shirt and slidable through said neckband SQC-lllGnp, and st for adjusting the neckband EGCUOJIS attached to the end pieces and lying in the neckband sections, said strings having ends projecting through apertures in the neckband.
3. In an article as described, a flap car ried by the shirt for reception of the rear coilar button, two movable neckband sections formed of a double thickness of cloth whose lower ends are attached to the shirt, overlapping end pieces formed by contiuuation of the neckband sections, one of said pieces being perforated 'with collar but-ton slots through both thicknesses of cloth and the other having collar button slots through one thickness only, said end pieces being free from the shirt and slidable through said necltband sections, strings for adjusting the neckband sections attached to the end pieces, lying in the nechband sections and having ends projecting through apertures in the neckband, the ends of said strings being fastened to prevent their misplacement.
In testimony whereof I alii my signature.
