DOOR-LOCK.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH SEDLACsnK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Binghamton, in the county of Broome and Sta-te of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-v Locks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in door locks.

The primary object of this invention is the provision of a lock primarily adapted for employment upon the. inner side of a room d Xr and .adapted for retaining the key operatively positioned inthe lock at all times when the mechanism is in its unlocked position.

A. further object of the invention is to provide a lock having a` bolt throwing key readily positionable in the lock when the mechanism is locked and adapted for releasing such mechanism, the said key then being entirely restricted against removal until after the mec"A fnism is re-locked and being removable then only upon the proper insertion and manipulation of a separate latch key.

A still further object is to provide a bolt lock with an operating key vwhich is retained within the lock casing at all times except when the bolt is projected and at such times being readily insertible for unlocking the bolt, but being removable only after such insertion upon actuating a key engaging mechanism by 'means of a latch key. A

TWith these general objects in View and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists of the novel construct-ion.,'combination and arrangement of parts-to be hereinafter more fully described and then claimed.

Referring more in detail to the drawings, the door 10 is illustrated in Fig. 1 as being in its closed position and being provided with the lock casing 11 secured thereto by screws 12- and having its locking bolt 13 in locked engagement with a substantially usual form of keeper .l'mountedgupon the door casing 15 and secured thereto by screws 1G.

It is to be understood that the locking casing 11 is adapted as an inside lock, being positioned upon the inner side of the door and with the key-hole 17 for the insertion of the operating key 18, does not extend through the door, the key only being i-nsertible from the inner side of the door.

The bolt 13 is longitudinally slidably I mounted within the casing 11 between lugs 19 and 2O arranged at the opposite sides of the bolt, while the outer free end of the bolt is movable inwardly and outwardly through an opening 21 in the lock casing, it being understood that a cover plate 22 is provided forthe casing which isA removablyretained in position by means of a screw 23 extending through therplate and havingscrew# threaded engagement withA a socketed postV tioned with its opposite end engaged with a yim side lug 34 of the casing.

The key 18 being insertible through the 'key-hole opening 17 of the front casing plate 22 and having a laterally projecting ward 35, thus positioned' within the casing, may readily aetuate the lock bolt after clear'- ing the safety catch hereinafter described, the said ward entering the V-shaped notch 36 of the bolt and engaging the tumbler 25 to release the tumbler lug 29 from the bolt lug 28, then allowing a further turning of the key to inwardly retract the said bolt. After such retracting movement of the key, a further turning of the key in the same direction will be prevented by means of a post 37 which extends through the casing adjacent the key-hole slot, and which post therefore, prevents the key from being then turned sufficiently to remove the saine through the said slot 17. The key however, may then be turned inthe opposite direction, which necessarily projects the bolt 13 and again positions the key ward 35,

yillustrated in Fig. 2.

A safety catch 38 is slidably mounted Within the casing upon one side 39 thereof,`

being adapted to slide beneath a lbridge piece 40 connecting the said side 39 and the post 24. An expansion spring 41 engages betweenv the side 43 of the casing in which the bolt opening 21 is provided, and the adyjacent end of the said catch 3S and whereby the said catch is normally positioned with` its curved shoulder' 42 against the side of the said post 24, with the opposite end or heel 44,0f the catch slightly spaced from the key-hole opening. The insertion of the key through the key-hole opening to the position illustrated in Fig. 4, allows the key to be turned/so as to engage the heel 44 of the said catch 38 and longitudinally slide the saine toward the casingjside 43, thus compressing the spring 41 and allowing the key lward to pass the said catch and thereafter the key may be turned for retracting the bolt andagain re-turned for' again projecting the bolt. Upon. such re-turning of the key ward, the same willV engage the inner face of 'the' catch 38' after eaving its operative engagement with the cut-out portion 36 of the bolt and the keywill thus be .y prevented'from'withdrawal from the casing.

Raeltiiieethfii are provided uponithe inner i surface ofthe catch 38 and are adapted to be engaged'by',` the prongs 4G upon'the operative end of a latch key 47 when such key is inserted through a circular key-hole 48 in the key-hole 43 and upon engaging the teeth of the catch, a turning of such latch key will retract the said catch su'l'liciently to allow the key ward to pass the key-heel 44. From this arrangement it will be seen that when the key is in the lock, the same will at all times be prevented against removal therefrom when the bolt is released by means of the post- 37 and will be prevented from being removed even after the bolt is re-locked, except upon the insertion and operation of the latch key 47 and a retracting of the catch 38.

The complete operation of the device will now be appare-nt from the above description l thereof as the manner of inserting and operatively turning the key 18 has already been herein set forth. j

What I claim as new is 1. Ay lock comprising a casing having a key-hole slot, a longitudinally slidable bolt within said casing, an operating key, a stop post within said casing adjacent the said key-hole slot and at one side thereof, and a key-controlled spring-pressed stop .catch within said casing adjacent the opposite side thereof.

2. A lock comprising a casing having a key-hole slot therein, a sliding bolt within the casing, a key for said lock adapted for insertion through the said slot, a key stop within said casing and positioned at one side of said slot, a spring-pressed longitudinally \slidable catch at the opposite side of said slot, and operating' means for the said catch.

3. A lock comprising a casing having a key-hole slot therein, a slidable bolt mounted `within said casing, an operating key for the said bolt, rigid key-removal preventing means at one side of the said slot, and a keycontrolled spring-pressed key removal preventing catch arranged at the other side thereof. i

4. A lock comprising a casing having a key-hole slot therein, a slidable bolt mounted .within said casing an operating key for the said bolt, rigid key-removal preventing means at one side of the said slot, a yieldable key-removal prevent-ing catch arranged at the other side thereof, rack teeth upon one .side of the said catch, and a latch key for the said catch having end prongs adapted for engaging the said rack teeth when positioned within the said casing.

5. A lock comprising a casing having a key-hole slot therein, an operating key for the said lock, a reciprocating bolt within the said casing, rigid means adapted for the pre- ,Vention of the removal of the said key from,` the casing when the bolt in its unlocked position, and a key-controlled spring-pressed @meren @3 shiftnble enten normally positioned in the removing path of movement 0I" the said key when the bolt is projected.
