This invention relates `vto locking devices and has particular `reference -to French casenient locks.
Among the objects of vthis invention is :to provide a French easement vlock adapted to be mounted upon a pair yof co-operating doors or the like, Aone of said doors because it bears the weather strip or ffor other like reason, being adapted or intended to open first, said llock beingso `a'rrangedthat when the doors are closed, lthat section oifthe lock borne by the door that wasthe last to close will actuate a. detent or :the like within the section borne bythe other door to prevent the unlocking of the door that was closed first before the other isagainopened.

Suitable bolts 15 and 16 or the like, shown here as bro-ken off, co-operate with suitable keepers in a frame above and below the doors. Knobs or handles are fastened to B at 17 preferably only upon the inner side of the door whereby the bolts 16 can be operated to unlock the door. Knobs or the like are secured to A at 18 preferably upon both sides ofthe door to operate the bolts 11 and 15, suitable key operated means being providedat 19 whereby the mechanism can be locked against-operation .at 18 after the door bearing. section A has likewise been locked shut. Thus as can be seen Sreadily fr'om- Fig. 1, when section A moves intoV engagementwith B, the offset 12 will `ride along -the chamfered face of the detent Iso that when theoffset has entered the recess 13, the detent will have been fully depressed intothe socket 21, leaving' a space within "said socket adjacentthe chamfered face lfor `reception -of the lbolt 14.
The detent comprises fa guide or tongue 23 formed preferably at the base ofthe triangularportion ofthe detent and extending parallel thereto and rearwardly of the chamfered face so as to cti-operate with the track or guideway 24 which is formed within the offset pertien 25 of the` casing so as to guide the detent in its reciprocation between the eXtreme inwardy limit. of motion as shown in Figs. 2 and` Sand the extreme outward limit of motion as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. Secured to' the" base of the detent is a screw or headedppin 26 which is adapted to ride in the slot 27 formed lengthwise ofthe guideway 24,'thej' L28 into which isset a pink 29 which is adapt* ed' to bear upon theinner face of the flange 11 (see Fig. 4) .to limit the outward movement of the detent aga-instfthe force of a spring- 30 which bears in a notch or guideway 30 formed'at the rear of the head of the detent and adjacent to the guide 23.
The bolts 16 are operated'in any usual manner as by the tumblery 31 which actuates the lever 32 which' in turn causes the bell crank 33 to operate against the force f of the spring 34 to retract the bolts, said spring tending to cause the bolts to be proj ected. Vhen, as has previously been stated, the doors are locked shut, it is undesirable to have the section B operable for unlocking before the door A has {irstfbeen unlocked and opened. `This is one of Vthe functions which as will now be seen is accomplished by the `detent 2O.y For the locks being properly engagedV as shown inFigs. 2 and 3, and the bolts 16 snapped outwardly into their keepers, the detent under actuation by the edge of the offset 12 will have moved inwardly between the ends-of the bolts 16 so as to lie in their path as shown in dot and dash lines in Fig. 3, and so preventing the retraction thereof by actuation of the mechanism at 17. 7 This section can not therefore be unlocked before the door A has been opened, when the detent 20 will be moved outward by the spring 30 into position shown in Figs. 1 and 4, permit-. ting the bolts 16 to be retracted, .the ends thereof then sliding inwardl and behindV the detent 20. This function whiclrfis. per: formed by the detentA 20ris in the `present state of the art taken carev of by the bolt 14. By adding the detentf20, however7 I secure the importantadvantage of having Va closure for the socket 21 preventing `tampering with the lock when the door-iA 'is open, orthe insertion of zafinger -as by a child and the clamping thereof between thel bolts 1G when the mechanism is actuated by a turn of the knob at 17,v Furthermore, the appearance vand salabilityofthe lockis greatly improved thereby- I claim: Y
